Nighttime routines

How do you put kids to bed by yourself?
My DS doesn't go to bed till late...last bottle usually 11 ish or midnight.
My DD has been going to bed around 7:30... earlier if I get dinner ready sooner.( if im not feeding the baby - takes almost a full hour STILL)
I have been putting my DS in the swing so my DD and I can eat together and then I give her a quick bath or shower...then pjs ..a book or two and then crib...all while my poor DS is by himself downstairs in swing.
My DH's schedule always varies what time he will be home... never before 8pm.
My DS is going to outgrow the swing...I'm hoping it isn't before he starts sleeping earlier and through the night fully
Any ideas on how to handle this?  I'm going back to work the Monday after Thanksgiving.   Right now.. I bathe him during day but obviously am going to have to do it at night soon... I can't do it with them together bc my DD is still young and the idea of rinsing her hair with him in the tub really scares me!

Re: Nighttime routines

  • Could you get something more portable, like a rock and play, bouncy seat, etc so LO can be a part of the nighttime rituals?

I'm still missing why you can't bathe them together. What do you fear? As long as he is in some sort of infant tub he will be fine.

Why can't you snuggle them both while you read a bedtime story? Maybe a few books with some dim lights will help your DS to relax and go to bed earlier as well.

  • I just don't feel like it would be safe yet. My DD doesn't like getting her hair rinsed and tries to jump out.. get away from me...slips..etc... and so I have to hold her.. and don't feel like I would be able to hold both of them while trying to clean both of them at the same time.  I always try to have one hand on him at all times when he is in the infant tub, too.  Aggh.

I might try it with my DH home tonight.

Unfortunately.. our bathrooms are really small and the bouncy wouldn't fit.. maybe in the doorway..

Two weeks ago I tried to bring him up for bedtime to read with her.. I had to feed him in her glider in her room.. and she freaked..wouldn't go to bed... I think it was territorial.. only time when that happens.. when I bring him to her room... she's fine with him being downstairs.. but it is her space....that has been the only time I see her get weird about him... if I put him on "her" boppy...in her room...Maybe we will read books in his room instead.

  • We often put DS in the bouncy seat and bring him into DD's room with us while I do jammies, books, songs, and bed.
