Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Solids and BMs

Hi, I have a gross question.

We started Eli on solids about a month ago, and he loves it. We knew that he was susceptible to constipation because of past bouts with it, so we have been sure to let him have lots of prunes and have tried to limit the really binding stuff.

His BM's have sometimes been hard....like an adult's. Not every time, and he doesn't seem upset by it.

Seems to be more since we introduced carrots and peas. Any correlation? Is this normal? He eats about 6 oz solids per day.

Re: Solids and BMs

  • Peas do the same thing to my LO.  We haven't tried carrots yet.  From what I've read, peas should have the opposite effect. . . I've stopped giving them to her until she's a little older.  I'm hoping when her system is a little more mature, she'll do better with them.

  • It didn't matter what we fed our LO, he always seemed to be stopped up. We tried prunes, juice, cutting solids, etc. Our pedi finally recommended that we start him on Lactulose. It's a sugar that your body can't digest and it pulls more water into the intestines to create softer BMs. We've only had minimal success with this. Hoping things get better soon otherwise I will be chatting to the Pedi again at his 9 mo appt.
