July 2012 Moms

Had my first appt today!

Due to my history of losses, my dr. wanted to see me right away. I got blood drawn today and will have more blood drawn on Monday and later next week as well.

Dr. checked my cervix and so far everything looks good.  He did give me a big list of do's and dont's: No sushi, no bologna, unpasteurize cheeses and a whole lotta of other things not to eat.

Also, can't have my heartbeat over 140. So I'll be down to brisk walking.  Boo.  I wonder how those other ladies run so much and it's ok for them.

Because I'm only 4wks 4 days pregnant, there was no need for an ultrasound.

Anyone else had blood drawn or have seen their drs?

Re: Had my first appt today!

  • Sounds like a great appointment!

What were some of the other no-no's?

I don't have an appointment until a viability ultrasound November 21. My first visit with my OB is November 28.

Here are some other things he told me to avoid (typing exactly what my pamphlet says:

    no artificial sweeteners

No tobacco, no alcohol, no recreational drugs

    limit caffeine/tea/cola/chocolate

    No handling of cat litter

    No hot tubs or spas

    no preserved meats

avoid anything sliced on a slicing machine. (pre-sliced, packaged and then pasteurized products are fine--like Kraft American Cheese or Hillshire Farms Turkey).

canned tuna should be limited to 6 oz a week.

  • Was the heart rate thing prescribed specific to your history of miscarriage or some heart problems you have?

Because the recommendation for pregnant women not to exercise is outdated and incorrect. Non-impact exercise is very good throughout pregnancy, and should be encouraged.

  • That's great you already had an appointment!  I don't have my informational appointment with the nurse (order for bloodwork, what to do/not do, etc.) until December 6 and then I don't get to see an OB until December 27.  It seems so far away!

I'll get an order for an ultrasound at my nurse appointment so I'll have that before I see the OB and I may have a consult with my peri before then as well (we've seen one for my past 2 pregnancies).  I really wish my doctor did early appointments.  I realize your losses are the reason for your early appointment and I'm sorry you had to go through that.  I've only had one loss myself, but it was extremely hard.

It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

I don't have any heart problems but I guess due to my history of losses, he doesn't want to risk anything.

I also feel like that 140 bpm limit is outdated.  I think exercising is healthy and should be encouraged.  Just don't go overboard.

I'm surprised they didn't want to see you earlier.  Did you mention your previous loss when you called?  Maybe they didn't have your chart with them or didn't notice it.  I would give them another call to see if they call squeeze you in a little earlier.

  • The reason so many mamas can keep running/exercising is because 140bpm is pretty high. Women who are in good shape would need to sprint to get their hearts beating that fast.

I didn't mention it when I called, but I'm not sure it would have made a difference.  I had a 2nd trimester loss so they all thought things looked great in the 1st trimester last time (I disagreed and thought the baby was measuring 2 weeks behind).  I do know if I call with any problems at all they will order an ultrasound.  I had 3 extra first trimester ultrasounds with my son due to spotting and that was on top of my two earlier ultrasounds with my RE.

  • I haven't made an appointment yet, but I will next week- we live a pretty rural area and there wont be a wait to see my Dr. - because this is our 3rd child, I dont feel like these is a big push for me to be seen, I already know what they are going say! However, I would like the confirmation that the little guy is going strong Smile
