New Job

I started a new job last month and I am currently at the end of my 5th month of being pregnant. I haven't told the company...anybody else start a new job while pregnant and happen to know the state laws? ( if any...most I find you have to be working for at least a year)

My company offers STD but unpaid no matter how long you have been with them. This after 6 months of employment, which happens to be 1 day after my due date.

Re: New Job

  • I don't know about state laws but review your employee manual and talk to HR.  You can speak to them in confidence to plan.   I hope your baby is late so that you can qualify for STD!  I would probalby take vaca/PTO until the 6 month mark so that I qualify :)

  • I found out I was pg 1 week after starting a new job. I am only part time, but I still qualified for 6-12 weeks of unpaid leave. I talked to my HR person who negotiated my actual leave for me and I got it in writing. Basically, I was off from June 1 to August 1 and I had my baby on the 13th of June. Luckily, I only had to work 24 hours the month I went back, so it went really well for me.

  • Legally you won't qualify for FMLA unless you've been there one year and worked at least 1250 hours, however many companies have more relaxed policies (my company grants 26 weeks of protected leave, plus some other nice benefits.)

Its too late now but you probably should have discussed this when they made the offer. I agree with the other posters that the best place to start is with your HR department, that way you can gather all the facts about what leave and benefits you qualify for before going to your boss with a proposal.
