So this is going to be Evan's joint b-day/Xmas gift...but I don't really like the Thomas themed table and want something a little less busy since it will be in our living room. The pottery barn activity table looks great but it is $200. gulp. Any other ideas? I plan to assemble the track and glue it together - just like barnes and noble - and then glue it to a wooden base that I can put on the table but take off if we want to use it for something else.
Does anyone have a train table? Any tips??
Re: Train table
We don't have one yet, just the Step 2 one that has built in track. Be 100% sure Evan (or Leah) can't handle the track being in pieces before you glue it. We thought about that route first, but glad we waited it out. R now can now leave track be, so when we do get one we won't glue it.
Track is really pretty $, I would hate to ruin it. Dh actually enjoys playing and changing up the track, he would prefer it this way. It will store much easier in a box when not being played with rather than on a board.
We didn't wait with our free GeoTrax stuff and we set it up in the basement. That track comes apart pretty easy but R didn't bother with it. This and playing with trains at my dads has be pretty sure we can not worry about him taking the pieces apart all the time.
I am going to start with CL, and then probably get the one at TRU. I want some storage, even if it is just bins or a drawer. I would never buy the Thomas one, like you said....too gaudy for a piece of "furniture".
We have an older hand-me-down version from TRU I believe & I bought the Circo track set from Target. 2 years & 2 boys later everything is still in awesome shape.
We didn't glue the track down, which has its +/-. Now that Charlie is a little older he likes coming up with new arrangements (ok, and so does DH), but Paul does rip it apart a lot. We've also been talking about adding in a few new pieces which would be tough if it were glued together. We have taken all the track off & used it as a regular activity table once or twice too

I have one the has light oak colored sides. It is adjustable in size, a square or rectangle. I couldn't tell you who makes it or anything, I bought it second hand. I was actually looking to get rid of it, but not the tracks.
My kids would hate glued down tracks. They like them when we go places, but at home they just like to build railways. They can spend hours building, but then all of 5 minutes running trains on them. Now they actually just like building giant railways on the floor.
