Breastfeeding

Quantity?

I am exactly 7 days postpartum.  My milk started to come in a few days ago.  Currently, I pump every 2 1/2 hours and am able to get about an ounce of milk from both breasts combined.  Unfortunately, this does mean that I've been having to supplement with formula (my daughter will not latch onto the breast yet).  My lactation consultant referred me today to a website about "low milk supply."  I know that everyone is different but is an ounce every 2 1/2 hours really that "low," particularly at 7 days postpartum?  Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Re: Quantity?

  • I don't know if that would be considered low, but I think that if your LO doesn't have the opportunity to learn how to latch, she won't.  I would try to work with either a different LC or contact La Leche League about working on a latch.  You don't want to end up EP'ing if you can help it.  I think that if you work on a good latch, then keep putting your LO to the breast that will help your supply more than anything.  You can also try to pump more frequently, or even for longer sessions until you can meet with someone.  Sometimes if you pump longer you can have a second let down which gives you more milk.

Thanks for your thoughts.  I think I will contact the local LLL branch - I've already been to one of their meetings.  I should have clarified, though, that I am also attempting to use a nipple shield to get LO to latch each day as well.  I'm just not having a lot of luck with it yet.
