How many ounces to freeze for a stash?

I am planning to return to work in January and my LO is almost 3 wks old.  My goal is to bf for at least 9 months and hopefully 1 year.  I am starting to think about freezing milk for daycare.  How much should I freeze in a bag?  So far, I am only pumping about 2 ounces in a 15 minute pumping session.  This is with all LO's feedings (I pump about once or twice a day while he naps).  I am hoping that my milk production increases in the near future.  For now, my question is how much are you or planning to freeze per bag?  If my supply increases to 4 ounces, should I split it in 2 or freeze entire 4 ounces?  I want to make sure that I won't waste any milk, but at the same time I want to efficient and freeze adequate amounts.  TIA

  • I'd start small - or with a variety.

In the beginning, I stored bags in 2oz increments.  It was really hard to get her to take a bottle, so we were only giving 1oz at a time and throwing most of that away.

By 6 months, I was freezing in 6oz bags, because she was taking 12 oz to daycare (4 3oz bottles).

  • I've been storing in 3-5 oz. I can mix and match.

  • I would probably freeze in 4oz increments, but you can really freeze whatever you are able to pump. It won't hurt to combine milk that has been frozen, as long as it is used within 24 hours of it being defrosted.

This. I started by freezing 4 ounces. She started DC when she was 3m. She is almost 6 and she still takes 3  4ounce bottle a total of 12 ounces at daycare.

  • I'd start with 2-3 oz increments.  You can always do two bags for a feeding but it's harder to use half of one bag.  Both my kids started out taking about 3 oz. bottles.  They eventually moved up to about 4 oz.
