Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Arm flapping

lo constantly flaps her arms and slams her fists on her belly. i posted a few months back about this. it is constant, all the time. she is seven months and seemingly developmentaly on track. i am worried because this is often seen in children with autism. is my lo the only one that does this.    it is in response to stimuli as well as spontaneous.     thanks

Re: Arm flapping

  • My DD does this when she is eating her bottle. She will flap her arm the whole time. It has gotten better since she can hold her bottle now. This might not be exactly what you are talking about...sorry if I am no help.

  • My daughter also does this and is about the same age. She does it when she is holding a toy also. I wouldn't worry at this point, is she showing other signs that concern you? Usually they aren't diagnosed until closer to the age of 2 I think.
  • My DD does it too. She does it when she is excited or playing with a toy. I'm not at all concerned.

  • DS does this!  I've heard that it's a way of getting their energy out (he does seem to do it when he's excited, eating, or ready for the next thing/boredom-related?)....and usually stops (or occurs less often) when they start crawling and walking.

As long as babies are developmentally on track and act social (babbles, laughs, etc), I wouldn't worry much about autism.  But always ask your doc if you have concerns.  Good luck!

  • Mine does it too!  Mainly when eating or laying down.  I have to watch him with toys because he'll nail himself in the head with it.  I think it's totally normal.

  • My DD does it a lot because she gets a good reaction from us when she does. I call it the gorilla, she thinks its hilarious.
