pumping before birth?

should I start early by pumping my breast about 38 weeks to get my milk to start coming in before the baby gets here?

Re: pumping before birth?

  • From my understanding, the placenta produces a hormone that suppressess the production of milk, so as long as the placenta is in your body, I doubt you would have much success.

And as pp said, you have to remove the placenta from your body before your milk can come in.

Some people pump off and on to attempt to induce labour. Pumping can cause contractions. Don't pump unless you know what you're doing and that is your goal.

  • No. Pumping before birth will not make your milk come in faster.

  • In my breast feeding class they said we come pump and freeze colostrum? I thought it was a little weird, but she said it could come in handy if baby is born early, etc.... I don't know if I will try it, I would wait a few more weeks if I do try it. Was anyone else told this? Just curious.

What? Yeah that's weird.  Don't pump until baby is here for any reason.

    No way.

Waste of time/effort and just plain uncomfortable. As well as the whole "causing contractions" thing.
