Baby Names

We agree on the name, but not the spelling...

We've decided to name our baby boy Evan Zelle.  Zelle was DH's grandfathers name, and we both really like Evan.  But DH wants to spell it Evin.  I think his name would constantly be spelled wrong, and quite possibly pronounced wrong.  What do you think?

Re: We agree on the name, but not the spelling...

  • I definitely prefer the traditional spelling of Evan

  • I prefer the traditional "Evan" spelling too. I agree that people will constantly be misspelling it if you go with "Evin", although I would probably pronounce it correctly at first glance.

  • Why does he want to spell it that way?  Just to be "different"?  To make your child "Unique"?  PLEASE tell your DH that the spelling of a name isn't what make a child unique.  And all it really does is say to people "his parents are idiots - they don't know how to spell....".

I truly roll my eyes when I see unique spellings and I think negatively of the parents every time.

    Don't do this.  Please.

  • I agree with all of you!  I don't know why DH is so stuck on spelling it Evin?!  I'm am NOT the type of person that likes normal names spelled different, just to be different.  According to some baby name sites, the spelling Evin is Gaelic for Swift and is a "real" spelling of the name.  I still don't like it.  My name is not super uncommon (Melanie) and people spell/pronounce it wrong ALL the time and it's annoying.  I don't want our son to go through that his entire life, constantly correcting people on how to spell his name.

  • Oh, and I'll put this out there.... you're using his grandfathers name, YOU are carrying the baby - YOU get final say on the spelling. :)

This was a card I was going to play w/ my DH if necessary.  He picked the name, but we disagreed on spelling.  In the end,I won, but if I hadn't, I was going to pull the "You picked that name, *I* get to pick the spelling....".

  • I agree with the spelling Evan.  With the spelling Evin it looks like ERIN to me.  With the lowercase v and r looking so similar.  Just a watch out.

  • Evan for sure.  Would it help your case if you did a clicky poll and could give your hubby some actual percentage results?  That's what I'd do.
  • Evan!

Evin looks evil. It also looks pronounce "even".

  • EVAN.....your husband's spelling is weird.
  • Tell your Dh that Evin makes me think of Erin being said by someone who can't say their R's.

Evan, on the other had, is a nice name. The "a" makes it sound and look much more masculine.

  • Your husband is wrong and it should be spelled Evan. No debate.

    EVAN!!!!

When I first read Evin, I read Evil!!!  Maybe that can be an argument against spelling it that way!!!!!!

This!  They are not the same name!  If you want it pronounced like "even" you should spell it Evin, but if you want the name Evan, spell it E-V-A-N.
