Progesterone

Have any of you had to have your progesterone checked?

My doctor wanted me in as soon as I found out I was pregnant to get my levels checked. So I found out Tuesday, called yesterday, and they had me come right in.

I asked the nurse exactly why they test progestrone, and she said "Have you had miscarriages?" and I said yes, 2. She just said, that's why, it helps give a boost.

I don't know what are good levels, bad levels? If they give me more, is it just a pill? A liquid?

Any experience/information with progesterone would help out! Thanks!

Re: Progesterone

  • Progesterone is a bit of a PIA but sooo worth it!

A good progesterone level during pregnancy would be above 20. Some doctors say 10...

I take the progesterone vaginal suppositories. The pill is not as effective and has more side effects. The suppositories are definitely a PIA. You have to wear a panty liner as the compound kind of leaks throughout the day. Most doctors will want you to take it twice a day until you are 10-12 weeks along.

I've been getting my levels checked each month at 7dpo to make sure they were high enough to sustain a pregnancy. When they weren't high enough I was put on the suppositories until a beta either proved I was pregnant or not pregnant. This last cycle was the first time I actually had a good level (19.2) but I still opted for the suppositories early on just in case this was our month...now I'm glad I did seeing as it turned out to be our month!

I recommend taking them whether your progesterone is good now or not. They don hurt and can only help. For me its just extra peace of mind...

    Good luck!

Thanks so much for this info!!! :) Do the pills/or suppositories have to be with an Rx or can you get them OTC?

    ETA: Posted w/o my input!

All correct. The only thing I wanted to add was that I've always heard on the boards about the 10-20 minimum as a good number. I've seen ladies with 30s and 40s and super high levels. However, at my RE, they only use this scale that goes up to 20. I don't really know if that 20 equaled something higher on the "regular" scale. If you have it checked and it seems lower, just check to see what scale they use.

I also second the pantiliner suggestion. I was on it vaginally twice a day, and then they upped it to three times a day at some point. It can make your cervix extra sensitive.

Also, the suppositories are with a Rx only. And it will need to be taken to a compounding pharmacy. I spend $50 for a 30 day supply.
