crinone gel - talk to me about side effects

My dr. prescribed crinone progesterone gel, vaginal suppositories, this cycle.  But picked it up but I started reading about all the side-effects and it's kind of scaring me into maybe not doing it.  Anyone used this gel?  What were your side effects like?

I also read on the prescription leaflet that there have been reported cases of fetus problems when using this in early pregnancy.  So why would they then prescribe it to get pregnant?  Is it just being overly cautious on the drug company's side to say that?

I married my best friend 6/24/07. Started TTC. Ectopic pregnancy found at 6 wks 5 d.(methotrexate shot on 11/21/07). 1st IUI (natural/August '09) - bfn; 2nd IUI (w/ gonal-f) - bfn 3rd IUI (w/ gonal-f) - bfn 4th IUI - cancelled due to too many follicles Laparoscopy 1/10 - endo found 5th IUI (w/ follistism) - bfn 6th IUI (w/ follistism) - bfn Taking a break b/f starting ivf June - IVF - failed December - IFV#2 - failed Trying naturally again for now

Re: crinone gel - talk to me about side effects

  • I have been using it since 10/17 and I don't have any real side effects.

this is going to be TMI ..... but I do notice sometimes I "leak" feels like water but I knows it's the Crinone.

My breasts really aren't sore .... as that is listed as a S.E. ..... but I do feel like parts of them are on fire in the inside on the sides. Very strange feeling.

Everyone will have a diff reaction, you might not have any!

  • I would say 90% of the ladies on this board use some form of progesterone while ttc - your RE wouldn't prescribe it to you if the benefits didn't far far far outweigh the risks - that being said, if you have concerns you should talk to your doctor about it.

Side effects of progesterone mimic those of early pregnancy... nausea, cramps, sore boobs and or nips, headaches, tiredness, irritability, etc.  Some people experience them all - some few or none.  Personally the only s/e I noticed from prometrium (similar to crinone) was that it made my boobs sore.

  • i've been using crinone since 10/10 and haven't had any s/es.  my boobs are usually sore during the 2ww so that's not a s/e from the crinone for me.  i use it at night as right before i go to sleep and haven't had any leakage problems.

i can't really speak to the fetal issues in early pregnancy line that you read in the package insert but like hannah said, i HIGHLY doubt our REs would be Rxing progesterone supplements if the risk was significant.
