Anyone take Dom and it not work? & More Questions!

JW. I was taking 20mg 3x a day and am going to start 30 3x a day now as I haven't noticed much of a difference...

How much are you ladies pumping after nursing? I get about 4.5 oz a day total right now out of 3 or 4 pumping sessions after nursing.

Also, I did weighted feeds with my daughter at about 5 weeks and 6 weeks and both times she only got 1.75 ounces. Hows that sound to you?

She's soooo fussy and the one time I gave her formula to experiment her fussiness was so much less. Yes, her weight diapers are fine, and her weight gain is at the bare minimum for "fine"

  • This is a tough one! Although I don't have an answer to the Dom because I have never gone that route. You would think because she has wet diapers that she is getting enough bm however I think you have to take into account her fussiness and 1.75oz doesn't seem like enough to me especially if she is eating every 2-3ish hours. And, I think that when you gave her formula and her fussiness decreased that I also something to consider. I would say to feed her at the breast and then give her a bottle of either bm, formula or a mixture afterwards while you are pumping. You will know really quickly if she is still hungry. Don't feel guilty about having to supplement, nothing is worse than a cranky, hungry baby. And you are taking all the right steps to increase your supply so hopefully it will catch up! Also, make sure you are drinking plenty of water too!

  • They say Dom can take at least 2 weeks to have any effect at all... how long have you been on it?  I tried it and had an oversupply issue b/c of it, so I stopped. My milk has since regulated itself and I am now producing what my LO needs ( I still get paranoid about my supply though... like a lot of us do who have had problems in the past).   Definitely don't feel bad about supplementing. #1 rule is feed the baby!  As long as you continue pumping when you supplement, you are telling your body what your LO needs, so you should be ok.

    Good luck!

  • This sounds nearly identical to the experience I had with my daughter (who is now 18 mths).

I took domperidone (30 3x/day) for nearly a month and did not see an increase in my supply.  I was also eating tons of oatmeal, drinking gallons of water, pumping 8-12x/day with a hospital grade pump, etc.  The most my daughter ever got from a weighed feeding was about 1.6oz.

Eventually I saw an LC who determined that I have insufficient glandular tissue.  I had to supplement with formula, but I stopped taking dom and pumping all the time.  My 18 mth old still nurses at night.

Hope this helps-- not trying to be doom and gloom but wanted you to know others have been there!  I agree with PP who said to give it a few weeks.  If you haven't already, talking to a lactation consultant might help to give you a plan if you need to supplement.
