Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Phasing out the bottle?

How do we know when to phase out the bottle?  She has been on solids (cereal, fruit and veggies) for lunch and dinner for about 3 months.  We have been doing the bottle along with those as well as a full bottle only for breakfast with two tbsps. of cereal in it.  Now she seems to need more in the morning so I added yogurt.  Since she needs solids at all three meals now, should we start phasing the bottle out?  How long should she still have it?

Re: Phasing out the bottle?

  • Breastmilk or formula should be their main source of nutrition until they are a year old from all I've been told and read. What's the expression? "Solids before one are just for fun?"

We do four 8 oz bottles of formula, plus 6-8 oz of solids per day.

  • DS #1 I had completely off his bottle by the time he was one. I just transitioned everything to a sippy. I think it was at 10 months that I got rid of the afternoon (4pm) bottle and replaced it with a snack at around 3pm. After that was the mid morning bottle. Then the morning bottle. The last to go was the night time bottle. But I found the easiest thing to do was get everything over to the sippy and then eliminate. Hope that helps. GL

  • You can transition to a sippy cup, but their formula/BM intake should not be reduced before 1.

This! If you want to use a sippy that is A OK but breast milk or formula should be their main source of nutrition till one. Solid meals should not replace bottles. Personally I will continue to nurse before each solids meals so that he fills up on bm not solid food. Bm or formula is much high in calories and nutrients per an ounce than almost any food in existence. ly discuss it with your pediatrician if you are considering weaning. Not sure how old your LO is.
