( I apologize for the length this has become a dissertation!)
Dh and I differ greatly in our name opinions and likes. Our Son's names is Elliot Aguro O. Elliot is the ONE boy name we could agree on and Aguro was my DH's mother's surname as she passed away in 2007. It is Ugandan.
Now we are having a girl and we may have actually found a name but I am a bit apprehensive about it. I have always wanted to name a child after my grandmother. Her name was Goldie Agnes. To my surprise Dh actually likes Agnes and wants to use it as a first name. I was planning on using it as a middle name with Vivian as the first.
I know Agnes is not some peoples style but I do like old names. Is it too old though? I think we have come to a conclusion but I want to see what other people think.
Planning on - Vivian Agnes O.
DH suggests - Agnes Addison Arlene O. ( Addison after his stepmother and Arlene after my mother, both are middle names for the mothers)
I think AAAO is to wacky for initials and we need to just have 2 of the A names.
Final conclusion; Agnes Arlene
It is a little old fashioned and I think a bit of a love/hate name for people but I think it fits. I hate to choose between the two grandmother's middle names but I suggested baby #3 be named after his stepmother using either her middle or last name depending on if it is a boy or girl.
opinions?
Re: Agnes
I don't know how I feel about an Agnes...I'm torn.
As a little one-adorable!
As a teenager- she will prob. hate you for naming something that her best friend X's great grandma is named...she might even create a made up nickname or insist you call her Hadlin. (or she will love it--teen girls can go either way!)
As an adult-a nice, classic name.
I think it has some cute NN potential (Aggie, Ags, Nes).....Hmm, I say I like it.
I DO NOT like the AAAO initials-I'm with you on that one!
I love Agnes. It was my grandmother's mn (Janet Agnes) and almost my fn. My mom wanted a little Aggie.
Agnes Arlene is a great name, especially due to the family connections.
Vivian Agnes is also very nice.
I would also agree with you AAAO, it is a bit much.

I really like Agnes and don't think it needs to be in the MN only spot.
I'm not a huge fan of having names which begin with the same letters, but Agnes Arlene isn't a tongue twister.
I like it!
You could also consider a variant like Ines/Inez.
Hm. I want to like this. I love old people names, but this one is teetering on the fench of dislike for me. Maybe because it sounds clunky/harsh? But seeing a sweet little Agnes might sway me the other way.
Agnes Arlene flows well, but personally, I would give a more mainstream middle name in case little Agnes decides at some point that she wants to go by something else. I get that it's a family name, though.
In any case, nothing wrong with these names, so if you love them then don't listen to a word I say!
I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.
I like Agnes! Agnes Arlene is an adorable name, and I think you should go for it.
Vivian Agnes is also very nice.
I really love the name Agnes. I think it's adorable on a little girl and it ages well. I think Vivian Agnes is precious, but I don't mind Agnes as a first name either!
ETA: I do NOT like Agnes Addison Arlene. The styles are too different and it's too many A names.

I dislike Agnes--along with Agatha, I find it to be one of the few old lady names I just can't get on board with.
However, I like that it's a family name and that you and your husband both like it, and I also seem to be in the minority here on disliking it. So if you love it, you should definitely go for it!
(That said, I love Vivian and think Vivian Agnes sounds awesome, in case you change your mind again).
My daughters name is Agnes. I named her after my grandmother who I adored and came to love the name. Unfortunately, she was born very prematurely and passed away when she was 3 days old. We were going to call her Nessa.
I had to talk my husband into it due to the old lady factor but he grew to love the name as well.
