Re: BF and C-section?

  • as soon as we were both in the recovery room they had me BF, so I'd say it was probably about an hour or so afterward, so not too long.

  • I had to wait for the freezing to wear off. I couldn't feel my b00bs when I first went into recovery.
  • My baby was in recovery with me immediately after my c/s.  We tried BF almost immediately after.

  • I was able to BF in recovery. About an hour after delivery. It felt a little funny just because you are still numb but it went fine and we EBF for 13 months! Best of luck!

  • I was able to breastfeed as soon as we got to my recovery room.  I'm not sure exactly how long it was after she was born but it was within the first hour or two.  She was still very alert.  My c/s didn't lead to any breastfeeding problems and I nursed her for over 2 years.

  • It took us a few hours and just to ease your mind, I don't know if I was really lucky, but breastfeeding is going really well for me, even if I had a c-section.

  • I didn't have a great experience either time with my c/s's. However I had no problem breastfeeding. With my first DD we both got very sick during labor, I had an emergency c/s and didn't see her until 12 hours after delivery, she still nursed like a champ, I am sure they gave her a some formula in the nursery. The second time I had a scheduled c/s they were unable to place my spinal I had to be put under general. They put her on my breast while they were waking me up. I remember telling my dh over and over I couldn't stay awake, so don't let the baby fall. Anyway by a few hours later she latched good, and is still breastfeeding almost 8 months later.

Don't worry having a c/s will not ruin your chances of breastfeeding. Sorry things aren't going to go the way you wanted :(

  • Like previous posters, first time to attempt breastfeeding was in recovery room as soon as the surgery was finished. I don't actually remember the first attempt that well, since I was so drugged up on all that morphine, but my husband told me about it. I remember much better after I was already moved into the mother/baby postpartum unit.

  • I BF as soon as I was wheeled in the recovery room. The LC was there and helped me as I was somewhat out of it but I was so glad that with my RCS I got to BF--with my 1st c/s, I had to wait several hours after my DDs were born.

  • With my twins - they didn't come into recovery with me until 4 hours after my c/s (they were preemies)

With this baby - he came with us to recovery and I was able to BF within an hour.

Make it clear with your OB that you want to BF ASAP after your c/s and as long as there are no emergencies you should have no problem getting your wish.

  • The hospital where I'm having my RCS encourages BFing in recovery.  With DD, I was really shaky and tired after my c/s, so I didn't even try BFing until hours later, when I was in my room and had gotten some sleep, and she didn't nurse successfully for almost 24 hours.  As far as I know she wasn't given formula, and she dropped a fair amount of weight initially, but she gained a lot of it back before we were discharged.  I BFed for 21 months so our slow start didn't cause any long term problems.  I think the most important thing, whatever kind of birth you have, is having a hospital/staff that's supportive of BFing - ask any questions you need to so you know what to expect.

  • I was able to attempt as soon as I was wheeled into recovery(maybe a half hour later?). It was extremely awkward, as I had the blood pressure cuff going off every 15 minutes, the hr monitor on my finger, and some suction cup thingies on my chest(above the boobs).   DS didn't latch for 2 weeks, but his issues had nothing to do with my c-section!

  • we tried 30 min later...he didn't want anything to do with it (he literally screamed for the next hour..good lungs :) ), but we attempted 2 hours later..and i've literally spent the last week with him attached to my boob since.
  • Why can't you BF right after a c/s? My daughter and I went from the OR back to my room and BF right away. It depends on the hospital where you deliver though. The one where I had DD, I was only in one room during the hospital stay and she never really left the room. I had an amazing first time BF experience, I hope you get the same!
  • After I left the recovery room, so about an hour later?

  • As soon as I got into recovery, which was maybe 30-45 minutes after she came out. No biggie...she latched right on and has been EBF'd for over 7 months now.

  • What you should do is call your hospital to ask if babies are brought into recovery or if you have to wait until you're moved to your normal room.  They would not allow my baby in recovery (very stupid policy) so we didn't breastfeed until over three hours after he was born.  We had latch issues, and we had to use a nipple shield for about three months, but we're still going strong now at 17 months.

  • My hospital had a stupid policy and I didn't see DD except for briefly in the OR until after I left recovery. It was about three hours. We did not have any issues though.

  • We got DD on the boob as soon as we got back to our room, maybe an hour after she was delivered. She's been EBF ever since.

My SIL had to wait 8 hrs to see her DS after an emergency c/s but she still BFed no problem.

  • I was able to BF my son within an hour of his birth, when we were in the recovery room.

     A few suggestions:

Call the hospital or talk to your OB and see what they can do to make sure that you are able to nurse as soon as possible.  Check the hospitals policy with regard to having LO in recovery with you.  This will most likely make the difference between nursing w/in the first hour, or not being able to nurse within the first three hours.

Try to room in with your LO, and make sure to BF 8-12 x day.

Check to see if your hospital has a certified LC on hand and set up a time to speak with them before you are discharged (it is great to have someone qualified double check to make sure things are going right).

Have a LC number ready to go for once you are discharged.  Hopefully you won't have to use it, but it pays to be prepared.

  • I nursed him about an hour after my C-section, right after they handed him to me for the first time, it took them 45 minutes to finish sewing me up and to get me back to my recovery room, but then they gave him to me right away.

  • With my first son I nursed him in the recovery room.  So it was like an hour or so.

With my second they changed their policy and became "baby friendly".  So we did skin to skin in the OR as they were stitching me up.  And he latched on for a few minutes right there.  They cleaned him up and weighed him in the recovery room with me.  So I was able to feed him again as soon as they were done with that.

  • I bf'd in the operating room, as soon as they were done assessing DD, so like 5-10 minutes after birth. If you can't do that, I'm sure you can bf in recovery.
