TTC After a Loss

Shaking my head

I requested ALL of my medical history forms/lab results, etc from my RE and I was reading up about my HSG results I had done in July. I had to google some of the lingo and came across this comment in regards to recurrent pregnancy loss.

This is EXACTLY how I feel about those dang doctor's medical terms:

"Don?t you hate that phrase ?spontaneous abortion??
It?s kind of like ? hey ? she got drunk and knocked up and then went to get a tattoo, and stopped at the abortion clinic on the way! She?s spontaneous! And an aborter!
Also the term: ?habitual aborter?. It makes me sound like a crack whore who doesn?t know how to use a condom."

I couldn't have said it any better... ugh.

  • I hate these terms, too. You'd think that after all this time they'd come up with something different. When I was talking through options with my doc last night he kept saying "missed abortion" instead of miscarriage and I wanted to strangle him. It's the technical term, I get it, but hello, devastated woman here, maybe let's use some friendlier language. Sigh.

  • I agree.  Abortion is a horrible clinical term for miscarriage.  I also hated the phrase "products of conception" and "benign" on my pathology results, as if the "products of conception" were a tumor they biopsied.  No... I didn't have a biopsy, I had a miscarriage.  I'd much rather consider those results "normal."

  • I agree with all of you!  My baby was not a "product", he was a baby that didnt survive his medical condition!  Damnit!  But I understand they have to do what they have to do.  But if I saw the term "habitual aborter" on my ppwk I would be upset.  Thats very cold.

  • that terminology is horrible :( I am so sorry you had to see that. ((hugs))
  • (Hugs) I'm sorry hun. I got my records on Monday and also went through them, they referred to my m/c as a "Spontaneous complete abortion." I know it's just a medical term, but holy h*ll, that word packs a SERIOUS punch. I know it's hard, but try to not let it bother you. You know in your heart the truth, who cares what stupid words a doctor uses.

  • It's horrible because of the elective abortion procedures that are always being debated.  Members of the public have such a negative connotation with that word, and deservedly so.  However, it is the proper medical term.  That doesn't make it nice to see, though.  Just so you know, I didn't think that the reference to your multiple losses made you seem like a crack whore at all, but rather someone who'd just experienced more than her fair share of loss.  Just try to think of the term abortion the same way you would about penis, or vagina.  They're the proper terms and certainly don't mean that you chose this path for yourself.  Sorry you're feeling this way!

  • Ugh, I hate that term too....it's funny, when I learned about m/c in nursing school, terms like "missed abortions" or "spontaneous abortions" didn't bother me at all or strike me as odd. Now however, I hate it and completely agree with you!

It sounds like you are being a strong advocate for yourself though by asking to see your medical record, good for you!!!
