Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Feeding Time Question

Does it matter what time of the day you give solid foods?  For example, in between bottles, we've been giving our daughter oatmeal at 10am and a vegetable at 6pm (I figured it makes sense to give her cereal in the am and a veggie in the pm).   We noticed that she has a lot of gas at night while she's sleeping and we think it may be due to the vegetable late in the day.  My MIL (who is a pediatrician) suggests we switch the order and we give her the vegetable at 10am and the oatmeal at 6pm.

Do you think it matters?

Re: Feeding Time Question

  • Is the gas at night bothering her?

DS gets cereal and fruit in the morning, lunch is usually any combo of cereal/fruit/veggie/meat, and then dinner is usually meat/veggie combo.  And we try to feed him those meals at the same time we eat our own meals.

I would think that oatmeal is high in fiber, which could also produce more gas.

  • My babe is 7 months----She has cereal and fruit at 9---                                     fruit grain veg and meat at 12                                                                      snack-finger foods, a grain fruit and dairy at 3                                                       dinner- grain meat fruit and veg(usually what we have for dinner) 630                   Snack before bed usually yogurt                                                                   **bottles at 6am and before bedtime ALWAYS and i always offer a bottle after meals and snacks

She does not seem to have any gas problems, or any problems really. My ped told me not to be scared to try new things with her, she'll let me know if she's not happy. And she loves her meals, trying new foods and eating with Mom and Dad!

  • No. In fact, in the "old days," lunch was the bigger, hot meal (with meat and veggies), whereas dinner was often smaller (hence fruit). So sticking with conventions doesn't make much difference. I  give my LO fruit and oats in the morning, fruit in the afternoon, and veggies and rice in the evening, and she's just fine.

That being said, though, could be your LO just has an individual response to the veggies, so try switching the order and see if it works. Having fruit at night and veggies in the morning is perfectly OK.

  • great info - thanks ladies!!! can't wait to start feeding DS - he seems to hate food right now.

i might start mixing fruit with cereal in the morning then have a snack at lunch time and then a meal at dinner as well.

i'm afraid he might not be ready for food yet...maybe i'll wait a week or so

I tried to feed my LO everyday since she was 6-months old and it wasn't until last week that she finally opened her mouth to accept it. He'll let you know when he's ready. Good luck!
