new or used?

I probually already know the answer to this but I'll ask anyways. Someone I know if selling their medela PISA with a bunch of extras for $160(used a couple times). I would get all new parts for it.

Would you do this, or buy a new one? We have an HSA card and breast pumps can be used on it if the receipts are kept but it would drain our account plus I would have to pay a little out of pocket. In another month once we get our physicals done we will have another $200 or so added by my husbands work.  What would you do?

  • buy new, unless you know all her medical history.

  • I agree with PP -- buy new, especially if you can not be COMPLETELY assured of the health history of the original owner(s).

Also, I would really price this out.  I don't even think $160 is a very good deal for a used pump for which you still have to replace many parts.   A quick search on BuyBuyBaby.com or BabiesRUs.com says that the least expensive PISA is $244.  (Also other styles and/or at different retailers list for ~$249-299)Use a 15-20% off coupon and you bring that price down to $195-200 (max of $240 if you buy a $299 one with an easily-available coupon).  You then really need to price out how much the replacement parts are going to cost you if you buy used.  I could easily see spending $30+ on replacement parts, which is a cost you wouldn't have if you bought new.

Yeah -- after running that math, there is NO WAY I'd spend $160-200 on a used pump.

  • I would suggest looking into the Ameda if you are looking for a cheaper pump.  I have the Purely Yours and paid around $140 for it new, it is a closed system pump so you could sell it when you are done if you don't plan on having more LOs.  I use my 4x a day and love it. Mine did not come with a carry bag but I didn't want one, I use a regular backpack for all my work items and put the pump and everything I need for pumping in there and have a separate 9 can Igloo type cooler for my milk.  I needed a hard sided cooler for at work but most people don't and use a soft sided lunch bag or bottle cooler that will fit in their bag.
  • Personally I would consider buying a used pump, but I don't think that sounds like a very good deal. You'll have to buy new pump parts anyway. Buying a new Ameda (I have one and it's great) would probably be cheaper factoring in your HSA benefits.

  • If you go to Burlington Coat Factory Baby Depot & use a 20% off coupon (sign up for their emails), you can get a brand new PISA for around $200.  The Ameda pumps are just as good as the Medela pumps (from what I've read) and they are cheaper. You can get those at Baby Depot with a coupon, too.

The used pump you're talking about doesn't sound like that good of a deal since you have to replace all the parts.
