Maternity/paternity leave

How long did you and your DH/SO/DW get?

My employer was pushing for 6 weeks of maternity leave, although I could have had up to 12.  Between a terrible 4th degree tear that practically had me bedridden for 6 weeks and some major personal issues (family stuff), I ended up not going back.  I have some friends that have 5 months off!!

I think DH only got a couple days off - but I had both kids on a Monday and he took the week off for both (2-3 days in the hospital and then 2-3 weekdays at home with me).  I was very fortunate my aunt came Mon-Thurs of the 2nd week both times.

Re: Maternity/paternity leave

  • I was pulled from work and only PT when I had Jules so I didn't really qualify for any, plus it ran into the summer. I believe DH can take up to 10 days. I had Jules on a Tues and came home on a Thursday so I know he was home through Friday. I think he went back that Monday, because Regents week was starting and he's an 11th grade Special Education teacher. He needed to be there for that stuff. He did come home and take a few half days.

  • I get up to 12 weeks unpaid (6-8 weeks paid).  I only take what I can get paid.  With dd, it was 8 weeks bc I took the 6 weeks for a vaginal delivery and had 2 weeks vacation to use.  I have 2 weeks vacation saved up this time too, so it will be either 8 weeks total if vaginal and 10 weeks total if c-section.

DH gets nothing bc he is part time.  He works Fri and Saturdays.  I had dd on a thursday, and it was an induction that we went in for on a wednesday night.  So he had lined up someone to cover his shifts that weekend.  He did work the following week though.

  • I got 8 weeks paid (c-sec) and could take up to 12 weeks total (the other 4 weeks being unpaid through FMLA) I also took 2 weeks of vacation/personal time before I had Evan. I ended up not going back, and gave my notice about 3 weeks before I was supposed to return to work.

DH didn't get any type of "paternity" pay. He took vacation time. I went into the doctors on a Thursday morning, and DH was planing on going into work after... but my fluid was low so my doc sent me to the hospital that night to be induced. DH ended up taking off Thur and Fri (Evan was born Fri) and then the whole week following... but that Monday was Memorial Day, so he had that off anyways. If I remember correctly, he did go in for a couple hours one day that week, just to check in on some accounts/clients.

  • I got 6 weeks paid (partially, it was like 1/2 my rate) but was able to take up to 12 weeks FMLA. I think I was out for a total of 10, because I just went back after the holidays.

DH told work he would be taking off from whenever the baby was born until after Thanksgiving and they had no problem with that. He is salaried, so he was still paid his usual rate. He had accepted a new position but they did not give him the raise along with it, so they kind of felt like they "owed" him (at least the immediate managers in his plant). So he ended up being off about a month, which he will not be able to do this time.

  • I quit my job when I was 33w pg.  DH took 2 weeks of vacation when DD was born, and will most likely do the same when DD2 comes.
  • With L we moved, so I was home with him for the first 5 months.  It was so wonderful!  I honestly am already freaking out about going to back to work after only 8 weeks with this little girl.  We just can't afford for me to be a stay at home at the moment.  :(

DH was not around much when L was born because like I said we had just moved, for his job, so they were kind of understanding, but not really.  haha!  With this baby I'm scheduled for surgery on Monday, so he's taking that whole week off, and them my mom is coming for the following week.

  • I was on bedrest before delivering, so I was able to use the Sick Leave Bank with my district (school's version of Short Term Disability) after I had run out of sick and personal time (had only started working there 6 months before). That took me to the end of the school year (~6 weeks). I was allowed to take up to 12 weeks, and could use sick days, if I had them, to pay for it. I could have extended those 6 weeks into September/October, but because I had the summer off, I just went back at the beginning of the school year.

At the time, DH had to use sick/personal time, but because it was the end of the school year, and he had a field trip planned for what ended up being a couple days after DS was born, he only took off the day I was admitted and the day after, then another 2 days when I was readmitted to the hospital to be home with DS and take him to his pedi appointments. Not sure what he was allowed by contract.

  • I took 12 weeks for FMLA and then 3 months leave of absence.  Total of 6 months out of work.  I could have taken 12 weeks FMLA and up to 1 year leave of absence and still have a job to return to (not necessarily MY job, just A job..at the discretion of each manager).  All of this was unpaid beyond the 8 weeks NYS disability paid.  My husband took 7 months off for a childcare leave.  He can take up to 3 years off and still have a job, not necessarily his job.
  • I don't have any paid maternity leave.  I am not sure if I can take disability pay for maternity leave in NC. I get 4 weeks PTO a year so I have to use that up before going unpaid.  I plan to take the 12 week max, if I even go back to work at all.

SO is starting a new job in a couple of weeks so I am not sure if he gets any type of leave.

  • The way it works out for us, is we can take PTO.  Since both of jobs are generous in this area, we were able to take a bit of time paid.

With E:  took about 4 months, DH took about 3 weeks

With A: took 4 1/2 months, DH took about 3 weeks

  • In NY State you're legally allowed 8 weeks under STD (full time and 6months at the job, I think?) and up to 12 if your company has more than 50 employees. Which we do not. So I will be taking 8 weeks.

You get 50% of your avg weekly wage up to $170/week. Which is not much! Thankfully my employer has opted for a plan that bumped it up to $510 a week.

I do not think my husband gets any. But he is planning on taking time off anyway.
