Preemies

Here we go again...:(

So, I thought we had found the answer to LO's feeding problems. We switched her from breast milk to Similac Alimentum and the problem was solved immediately. She started eating like a champ anywhere from 4-7 ounces at a time, No vomiting at all. It was wonderful. Happy times at our house. This lasted for about a month. Well within the past week she has started vomiting again and slowly starting to eat less and get more and more fussy with the bottle. She's still taking Prevacid as always. We have made no changes. I did move up to a level 3 nipple because I thought maybe she was getting fussy because it wasn't coming out fast enough. It seems to be working fine but it hasn't help the problem any.

Have any of you experienced this? We see the GI on November 3rd so I will bring this up then. I don't know what to do! I'm thinking she's starting to teeth, even though the pedi doesn't think so. She chews on everything and is drooling more. I really can't go through this awful feeding stuff again. She screams and it's awful. Any suggestions or "been there done that's" would be very appreciated! Thanks!

  • I'm sorry to hear this. How about changing the nipple flow back to 1 or 2? I'm sorry I don't got much advice.

  • I have no advice, but you know that I completely understand your frustration.  Hang in there, momma!

  • Maybe you need to increase the dose of the Previcid since she has gained weight?  Sounds like she is in pain again. :-(

I hope the GI has some thoughts for you.

  • Do you use the prevacid liquid suspension or the solutabs? I hear the liquid suspension loses some potency after 2 weeks mixed. If you are using the solutabs you might need to increase the dose. My DD was on 1/2 tab a day and at about 14# we had to go to 1 tab a day (1/2 in morning 1/2 at night) when her symptoms came back. Also, reflux peaks at 4 months (although my pedi wasn't sure if this was actual or adjusted) and we definately saw that it was worst between 4 and 6 months actual.

I'd also drop down to the level 1-2 nipple. A faster nipple that's causing her to swallow faster than is comfortable/gulp might be causing gas issues that's aggrevating her tummy?

  • She's on compounded Prevacid right now and she gets 15mg (I think) split into two doses.

I went back to the level 2. She seems to be doing a tiny bit better. My mom called me and said she's actually eaten a little better today, she figured out a way to sit her up and feed her? She said she'd show me when I got home. She said she seems to like it better. Go figure, my mom would figure out how to get my child to eat when I can't. :(
