Drool/milk rash and irritation...what did you do for it?

My 7 month old DS has a terrible bumpy rash around his mouth and under his nose and it continues to be irritated by drool, milk, and his runny nose.  His pedi recommended putting Aquaphor on it at night and at naptimes, but I am concerned since that is a diaper rash ointment.  I just don't want him ingesting it (even though it would be in the smallest amounts ever).  I wasn't at the pedi appt. to ask a bunch of questions, my husband was...and you know how that goes with DH's--mine never asks any questions unless I write them down for him.  Haha.

Has this ever happened to your LO and what did you do for it/did it help/and how long did it take?  TIA!

  • DS2 has had an awful time with this issue for several months.  Eventually, per the pedi, we put a very small amount of regular cortisone cream on the rash 2x/day for 2-3 days then would take a break from it.  In addition, we have used a small amount of Aquaphor or plain Vaselline to block the moisture.  The rash happens because of the repetitive wet/dry action.

Unfortunately for Marcus, even that eventually failed.  We figured out that he got an infection as well and he was put on a topical antibiotic in addition to everything else.

  • Oh no! an infection!  did the antibiotic help clear it up or just take care of the infection?  You mentioned very small amounts of cortisone--is this not a good thing for babies (I am assuming this from you saying that you would take a break from it)?  When did you put the aquaphor or vaseline on?  I just don't want to trap anymore moisture, ya know?

  • We just finished fighting off drool rash. I put A+D ointment on DD's chin right before bed for a couple of nights, and it cleared up quickly. Now I just make sure to wipe her chin often to keep it dry. I dab a little Vaseline on it in the mornings before I drop her off at daycare. If her teachers notice the rash coming back, they put Vaseline on her as well.

  • DS gets this on his chest just under where his neck is, he has a super fat face (I love it of course) so his chin almost touches his chest and that's where he breaks out. I have this Aveeno eczema (sp?) lotion and it's amazing. It works wonders!! I might try that just as a trial. If nothing else it's great baby lotion so you won't waste money.

  • Diaper rash ointment (Boudreux's buttpaste seems to be less smelly for her face) has helped us.  I also put nipple moisturizer on it.  (One of the ones for breastfeeding moms.)  I figure that it's soothing for sensitive breast skin and okay to put in the baby's mouth.  It's been working well.  I also find that that stuff is wonderful chap stick...

  • I've just started to put on Lanisoh since i read that somewhere. It makes sense since it is non toxic to use while nursing and did a good job healing me when i first started breastfeeding. I did it for the first time last night so not long enough to tell if we've made any headway yet.

  • We did the exact same thing,

(DS2 has had an awful time with this issue for several months.  Eventually, per the pedi, we put a very small amount of regular cortisone cream on the rash 2x/day for 2-3 days then would take a break from it.  In addition, we have used a small amount of Aquaphor or plain Vaselline to block the moisture.  The rash happens because of the repetitive wet/dry action )

however we havent had an antibiotic. My little guy still has it and i hate when it flares up. He has allergies to certain food so I am always freaking out thinking its a reaction.
