Iron supplements?

Hi ladies!

I have such a stupid question.  My doc just recommended I take an over the counter iron supplement every other day.  I know iron is something you have to be careful not to take too much of.  He didn't specify whether it was safe to take the supplement on top of my daily pre-natal vitamin that he knows I am on...is it safe to assume I can take both at the same time?

I know this is a stupid question...but I would rather ask and not be worried!  Thanks!

Re: Iron supplements?

  • Yes, I took both last pregnancy.  Also, your doctor is aware of you taking a prenatal, or at least they should be, and they would look at any medications you are taking including vitamins, before advising you take anything.  If they are suggesting you take them, your iron tested low and your prenatals alone aren't cutting it.

  • I mostly post over on the multiples board, but my doctor put me on an iron supplement as well as I was slightly anemic.  She knew I was taking a prenatal vitamin and advised me to take them at different times so that they both could be absorbed.  So, for example, I take the iron supplement in the morning and my vitamin before I go to bed.

  • Yes, I added an iron supplement on top of my prenatal and am still slightly anemic so I have been taking two iron tabs (25mg I think?) plus my prenatal each day for the past two weeks or so.

  • Whew!  Thank you!
  • Yes you should be fine. I have to take two pill of iron a day and my midwife said just not at the same time I take my pre-natal. So I take both my iron tablets during the day and my pre-natal at night. They also told me to try and take them with Orange juice.

  • Should be fine. My prenatal vitamin has 27mg of iron, and my iron supplement has 300mg (says it's equivalent to 100mg of actual iron since it's a mix or something)...so I doubt if the supplement has THAT much iron the small amount in your prenatal will make much difference re. over-dosing.  My iron was VERY low, I felt tired and sluggish almost all the time..and now that I have the iron pill, I feel much better.

  • I take a Iron suplement from Whole Foods, is organic and very easy on my stomach, Megafood Blood Builder, it works really good for me!

  • I have a prescription for iron.  I often forget to take my vit tho. However Ive made more of an effort to take my iron lately..because  my DR. said if I didnt and my iron was too low when I delivered ...it means  blood transfusion.  Just have them check your levels on your next appt if you are concerned. Dont forget.. you can always call and ask..just to make yourself feel better about it.
  • I take Slow-Fe; it doesn't constipate you like some of the other brands. Also, iron poisoning can happen very easily in children but isn't so much a concern for adults. You would have to take a TON of it. I take one tablet a day at night time with a snack (since my prenatals are taken in the morning). My doctor said it's important to have a good amount of time between the 2 so that your body doesn't get rid of the excess. GL!

  • I didn't read above, but your fine.  I'm on prenat.s with extra iron and am taking iron supplements TWICE a day on top of that.  lol. Just make sure you even your diet out with some good fiber!
