Weaning my toddler ?

I just found out yesterday that I am pregnant again (YAY!).  I have a 17 month old little girl who is still nursing and bedsharing with me.  I know that when her baby brother or sister arrives, I'll be nursing and bedsharing with the new baby, so I feel like I need to wean E before too long so she doesn't have negative feelings towards the baby nursing and her not nursing anymore (basically I want about six months of not nursing to give her time to adjust before the baby arrives).Any suggestions for weaning a toddler?  She nurses mainly at night and I have a feeling it's going to be very difficult with the bedsharing.  Should I transition her to her own bed first and then wean her, or wean her and then transition her?TIA!

Re: Weaning my toddler ?

  • We're in the same boat (minus the bed sharing).  DD is 21 months and we're still nursing.  She is weaning on her own slowly.  At this point, I don't offer, but if she asks we'll nurse.  If we end up tandem nursing, so be it.

I agree - I think your bigger issue is transitioning from bedsharing.  I would work on that first - because you're going to need belly room in bed ASAP.

  • I night weaned DS1, and then moved him into his own bed. He transitioned to a bed a lot easier than weaning, but weaning only took a week or so? We did the Jay Gordon method, pretty much.
