Babies on the Brain

Paging Dr. BOTB re: group B strep

So, to make a long story short, i was in the hospital last Monday night for dehydration. While there, they took a urine sample and just called to let me know they found group B strep. I know it can cause problems if it passes to the baby during labor, but are there risk factors earlier than that? Can it cause preterm labor or other issues?  Also, I'm allergic to penicillin and from what I've seen, that's how it's normally treated. Will I potentially need a c section? I have a call into my doctor and they are trying to figure out what they want to do now. I may be acting stupid but I am a little worried.

  • I'll have to look up what I was on, but I had GBS multiple times while KU with TLF. IIRC, it can cause PTL, but if it's treated, you should be fine. It doesn't mean you'll need a c-section. They can give you antibiotics before delivery.

    BRB.

ETA I can't see my prior meds online anymore. I just remember I was on different antibiotics, and then after it kept coming back, I was put on suppression therapy.

  • I was GBS positive.  I had rounds of iv antibiotics every 4 hours during labor.  I was in labor a long time so it was lots of doses.  More annoying than anything.  I ended up with a C-section but it had nothing to do with being GBS positive.

  • GBS is just treated when you are in labor..depending on the mediciation we use to treat it determines how long we want it in prior to delivery..usually it's 4 hours..or sometimes 2 doses.  Penicillin is the primary thing we treat with, but with an allergy we test a senstivity on the strep and give you antibiotics based on what will work effectively.  We use Penicillin, Clindamycin, Erythromycin, Gentamycin, Cephazolin depending on what is needed. :)
  • Ok, thanks everyone. I feel a little better now. I googled before I heard back from the doctor and freaked myself out with the info about PTL and it crossing the placenta if you get it early, and how since it's in my urine it's in high concentration in my body. The OB doesn't seem worried and said we'll discuss it at my appt Thurs. thanks again :)
