Flying with BM...

My family is moving cross country next week and DS, DD, and myself will be flying approximately 3.5 hours on a non-stop flight.  I have a freezer stash of about 40 Lansinoh bags of between 2-4 oz each (which I do not want to loose).  I don't want to ship it for various reasons (mainly complications for when we arrive).

I have a hard-sided cooler that everything will fit it with a couple ice packs.  Should I put the cooler in my checked luggage or carry it on with me (with the 2 LOs and all their stuff)?  Would there be a problem with the milk going through the x-ray machine?  TIA

  • Personally, I'd carry it on.  I'm always worried about airlines loosing my luggage.  I'd complete flip if they lost that cooler.

Check your airline's website.  I'm sure they have a liquid policy for medical/child care reasons.

  • Will you have help on the plane/to the gate. I would normally say carry on for the same reasons that the pp said about losing luggage, etc...but with 2 kids on your own you'll NEED to be light with carry ons so that your hands are free to wrangle kids. With it being a nonstop flight the chances of it getting lost are a lot less so I'd check it.

You can carry milk onboard though, so don't worry about that issue. I'd probably check it though just to have fewer bags to manage. Usually when I fly alone with the kids I do a backpack carry on and the diaper bag and that's it.

  • Consider dry ice for the cooler -- the ice packs might not stay cold enough the entire trip.....

  • I flew with a bunch of milk.  TSA was totally fine with it.  I put a bunch of Lansinoh bags in gallon sized ziploc bags.  Then, I put ziploc bags of ice in between every 2 ziploc bags of milk. I put two bags on the sides too.  I dumped the ice before security and had vendors fill my ice bags after.  It was sooooo much easier than I thought!  And it stayed cold for my flight which was about the same length!  Good luck!

  • As long as the milk is still frozen solid when you get to the airport, they won't test it.  I recently flew and had some frozen and some liquid milk. They do a test with anything liquid.  Also, they are not supposed to let you take on any ice packs that are not still completely frozen, although some will look the other way.  So, just make sure you ice packs are good ones and really frozen as well as your milk.  You should be fine!
