DS is 8 months old. On Saturday he came down with hand foot and mouth disease, so he has sores in his mouth that make it painful for him to eat.
Up until yesterday afternoon he would nurse while fussing for short amounts of time. It wasn't easy, but at least he was nursing. Then, starting yesterday afternoon he began SCREAMING everytime I try to nurse him. I've tried everything I can think of, changing positions, pumping until let down, etc., and the results are the same, leaving both of us frustrated and in tears. He will sometimes take a bottle but it is hit or miss and only a few ounces. He will, however, eat purees.
I called his pedi today for advice and the nurse I talked to was an idiot. She suggested having him swish mylanta and benadryl to help the sores (yeah he's only 8 months), and told me to feed him whatever I could get in him and suggested milkshakes?!? or a slushy!?! Umm, no.
For now I am trying to pump to maintain my supply, but it isn't easy with a sick baby (I don't know how you EPers do it) and I'm not a very "efficient" pumper.
I'm SO worried that this is going to ruin my supply, which has never been that great, as well as our nursing relationship.
Has anyone survived something similar? Part of me says this will pass, he'll feel better, and things will go back to normal. However, the other part of me thinks our nursing relationship might be over, which really upsests me ![]()
ETA: I've read what Kellymom has to say about nursing strikes, but honestly most of it seems geared toward younger babies with latch issues
