Vomiting and teething... Related? help plz

So my son Gavin is 6 months old. He doesnt have any teeth, but from what I can tell he's definately teething. His 6 month appt the doctor had said his gums were swollen. He keeps chewing on his paci and fingers too. Hes had a lack of appetite in the evenings and mornings. This morning he had diarrhea and the past 3 nights he has thrown up in the early am (around 2-4am). I know they say vomiting and diarrhea arent related, but Im curious if maybe they are. I have read other sites that say they are. Its just very confusing for being a first time mother. I did call the pedi and they didnt seem concerned about it. I just feel badly for him to be getting sick. He seems fine during the day also. Any advice or comparison would be appreciated!!

  • Honestly I would just bring him in to the doctor. I would be worried too. I don't know if all that is teething. That seems like a lot for you DS to have to go through. There has to be something the doc can do...even if it is just recommend that you give him some advil.

  • Yes, it can be related. When they are teething, there is a significant increase in drool. Some of it comes out, and some of it gets swallowed. When they swallow it, it can upset their tummies (which could account for the vomit and diarrhea). If the doc wasn't concerned, I wouldn't be either. If you feel he isn't hydrated enough due to the loss of appetite, you can give him a little pedialyte. If the symptoms continue for a week or more (or get significantly worse--as in, he isn't keeping any food down, acting lethargic, or not producing enough wet diapers) then take him to the doc.

  • My DS is also teething so I feel your pain. He threw up a few times and the doctor said to have him checked out. It turned out that it was just teething, but it is worthing checking into. It could be an ear infection or stomach problems if you have tried some new foods. I would rather be safe and see the doctor. My pediatrician said there is no such thing as an over proctective mom at this age.
