For those of you giving your babies table food (chicken, steamed veggies, crackers, etc), do your babies have teeth? I've been kind of afraid to give LO anything except the purees b/c he doesn't have any teeth yet.
Nope, no teeth yet. We started with someof the baby mum-mum crackers, then moved on to carrots, bananas, pears, broccoli, sweet potato, and butternut squash. Just soft foods to get her to learn how to chew, and it also probably feels good on her gums because they are swollen. She has actually never had purees at all.
DD doesn't have any teeth and is eating fruit, puffs, mum mums etc. and chunky purees. They don't need teeth to chew. Think about it - you chew with your back teeth and they don't come in for a while. If baby needed them to eat they wouldn't be eating for a couple years.

Ace has 2 teeth. Having teeth actually makes me more nervous because now if i give him a "stick" of food he can bite off a piece easier. Like previous posters said, most babies just gum everything.
DD has no teeth but super strong gums. She chews food very well with her gums. The first few foods were given in small sizes (about the size of a baby carrot). Now I give her larger foods because she has shown me she can control how much she bites of and get's in her mouth (last night she had a chicken nugget, she ate about half of it).
My son still doesn't have any teeth but we feed him a little bit of everything - we still do some purees but also give bits of shredded chicken, pasta, rice, etc. We've also given him big rib bones or chicken drumsticks or bread rolls and he will gum it to death. We love it because it actually gives us some time to enjoy our dinner. :-)
ds has no teeth but the pedi told me to start food...soft stuff like chickes, grilled cheese, pastina, stuff like that,,,just cut it up to the size of a cheerio..im sure they will be fine..GL!!
Re: Another self-feeding question
I've been told by my friends who do BLW, that they mash the food with their gums.

Her favorites so far are pears and carrots.

C has one tooth and it isn't even fully in yet. As PPers have said, no teeth are necessary.
We started at 6 months. It takes some getting used to. C did some gagging while she was figuring it out but she is very good at it now.
