Pregnant after a Loss

Jerky movements?

Does anyone else's LO do this? He'll, every once in while, kick and punch me at the same time and it's a bunch of movements in rapid succession. I read jerky movements can be a sign of distress but is that what they are talking about or is it something different?

Re: Jerky movements?

  • mine does that sometimes! he also like, vibrates. it's almost like he's shivering in there. and i asked my doctor about it yesterday and he kind of looked at me like i was nuts? he said "i've never heard of that .. shivering? it's probably not him it's probably all your organs moving around in there and getting upset. as for the jerky movements, he's just having a ball in there - no worries. just wait til his movements hurt".

i don't think that's the best explanation... sometimes i have to side-eye my doctor. he'd rather talk football with me then about my baby.

  • LO does this alot too. I don't think of it as distress, I just think it's a burst of energy that he's just got to get out. And that he is growing big and strong. =)

ETA: Sometimes it happens when I'm laying on my side, on the side I'm laying on. So it could be the position he's in gets annoying to him so he'll let me know with his movement.

DITTO DITTO DITTO.  Speaking from experience only, my first pregnancy (was successful) my DD didn't move much at all, when she did it was light random cute kicks.  My second pregnancy (stillborn at 38 weeks) she moved constantly with rapid forceful movements, LOTS of hiccups, felt like she was punching me.  I don't know for sure, but I assume that meant she was in distress.  If you feel this way, talk to your OB about going for a nonstress test.  It can't hurt and should ease your mind.

  • I get that a lot - most of his movements seem pretty jerky to me, plus he gets fussy when I lay on my side and sort of roll my top hip over and starts kicking my hip like crazy. I have no idea what movement is "supposed" to feel like, but my doctor hasn't seemed worried about any of it. I'm not sure what hiccups are supposed to feel like either but I'm assuming some of it is that... sometimes he'll have a burst of energy then stop. Interestingly, my doctor told me NOT to do kick counts, just to make sure I'm feeling movement every day.

  • I guess I should have said in my original post that I'm not worried about it. I don't think he's in distress because it's not a constant thing. I plan on asking my dr about it but he also said nothing to me about doing kick counts, just to make sure the movements don't change. And during my 20wk a/s he was doing the jerky thing during the u/s and he wasn't in distress. I was just curious if anyone else's LO did it. I think it's more he doesn't like something about the position he's in so he's moving around.

  • Connor has jerky movements, but they are never what I would call frantic or worrisome.  I think he's just frog leg kicking (which I have seen him do on u/s before).

If you are worried, it couldn't hurt to call the Dr though.

  • Aiden does this sometimes as well. He is def more active when I am lying on my right side. He is typically more active at night or I'm just not used to feeling him when I am walking around. Every once in awhile he'll kick or punch down onto my cervix and that hurts. He freaked me out this weekend as I took benadryl bc my cold was so bad and I couldn't breath and then he was less active and I was convinced I had killed him. Luckily I have my doppler to put my mind at ease.
