C-sections

C-Section?

I started my pregnancy at 93 pounds. I'm now at 110 (at 17 weeks).

What I'm wondering is... do you think I'll need a c-section? I haven't talked to my doctor about this yet because I haven't met her (yet. I've only met with Nurses and whatnot). I have a check-up on November 4th with the MD.  Part of me REALLY wants a c-section, but the other part of me want to try to go natural.... however, I'm scared!  I'm not sure my hips are going to move all that much... especially since I'm still wearing my 00 jeans (while unbuttoned of course).

Do c-sections hurt? I know they take a longer recovery time, but that's about all I know.

  • I would never elect to have a c/s for non medical reasons. It's major surgery

  • Of course it's ultimate your decision you make with your doctor, but I agree with the previous poster - Allow your body the chance to do what it's meant to do. I'd go with c-section only if it was medically necessary.  There are so many benefits to deliver naturally - Do more research and talk with your doctor, but I'd suggest you try delivering the natural way first. Good Luck with your pregnancy!

  • My sister was 99 pounds soaking wet and was able to deliver a healthy baby girl.  Your body is designed to give birth.  Tiny people give birth vaginally all the time.

  • Honestly, I recovered faster than my friend who had a vaginal birth and she had minimal to no tearing. But I would never have a C/S unless it was medically needed. I was 100lbs when I got pregnant with our first and I was never worried about trying to deliver vaginally. Your hips will start to move and soften as the pregnancy progresses too.  But I did end up with a C/S due to fetal distress. The actual C/S doesn't hurt cause you are numb from your waist down. But you will be in pain afterwards (not immediately but a day or so after), but you may be in pain from a vaginal birth too if you tear bad enough. There is pain either way.

It's major abdominal surgery.  Once the spinal wears off it hurts to do everything.  It hurts to cough, laugh, sneeze, pee, walk, sit, lay down, shift, etc..

  • I was a pretty petite prego, I only gained 25lbs, and prior to baby I was very narrow in the hips region. I did try for natural birth with epidural. After 2 hours of pushing my sunny-side up (facing upward) DD didn't budge and I was wheeled in for a c-section. I wouldn't opt for a c-section unless it was necessary, as PPs said it is a major surgery, and the recovery time is long. I didn't feel as uncomfortable as some of my other friends who have had sections, everyone is different, discuss with your Dr but don't think because you're tiny you won't be able to push.

  • Yes, c-sections hurt. It is very unlikely that you would need one simply because of your frame. I'd try a vaginal birth first. My understanding is that the recovery is generally much smoother. I had no complications with my c/s, but I was in some pain for several weeks, I have a scar, I didn't get to hold my baby right away. I'd have much preferred a vaginal birth.

  • I would never choose to have a major surgery over a vaginal birth. To answer your question quickly, yes, c-sections can hurt like hell. I had an easy emergency c-section and it was awful.

As for your size, it doesn't often make a difference. Everyone is different. I was 100 lbs pre-preg and 130 when I gave birth. I'm still a size 0 or 1 now like I was then. I had a c-section due to fetal distress.

My Mom and MIL, on the other hand, are both less than 100 lbs. Between them they gave birth vaginally to six kids. MIL gave birth vaginally to twins.

This is NOT entirely true.  Sometimes complications happen.  Epidurals wear off and pain can happen during a c-section.  It happened to me, it was terrifying and it hurt.  Of course, it probably isn't the norm but don't rely on it.  Also, pain afterwards does happen.  In the recovery room I was in immense pain.  I was freezing cold and couldn't stop shaking.  It took forever to get meds and I didn't get to hold my baby until hours after her birth.

Either way, natural or c-section things aren't always easy or perfect but to chose a c-section over natural thinking it would be easier is foolish.  Like a PP said, do research.  Ask your doc lots of questions and don't assume a c/s will be less painful.  Recovery pain lasts for weeks/months and is a total B*TCH.
