Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Self Feeding

Hi~

My little guy is 8 months and only started solids at 6.  Spoon feeding is great and he loves his puffs.  I want him to start self feeding with other foods, but I never know how big/small to make the pieces.

Anything puff sized or smaller, he seems to have trouble grabbing, but I am afraid of choking on bigger pieces.  He is "chewing" his food well enough, but I am still not sure.  Any advice?

Re: Self Feeding

  • My DD is 6 months and started purees at 4 months.  She has been self feeding while we have dinner for about two weeks now.  We give her food in stick shapes so she can pick them up and put them in her own mouth.  She does really well.  She's had everything from broccoli to a hamburger (special patty we made just for her).  At first I gave her small pieces that she couldn't figure out how to put in her mouth, so I just decided to trust her abilities and give her larger food, she loves it.

  • The key is getting them big enough to grasp but soft enough they can mash it easily. We buy frozen veggies so that they are already cut up and steam them.

We gave C a steamed chicken thigh and she LOVED it.
