i had a spinal. i'm not going to lie, for me, it wasn't pleasant. the local they did first hurt like a normal shot with a big needle but the spinal didn't go intot he right spot the first time and the anesthesiologist was kind of moving it around in there and i could feel it. it wasn't pain like being stabbed, but it was awful, almost nauseating pressure. i pretty much told her to stop and that it definitely wasn't right and she took it out and re-placed it and it went in that time like butter, but i also think that is because i had a little anesthesia in me from the first attempt so i felt less. the whole ordeal took maybe 5 minutes? once it was over, i was good to go though. it didn't wear off for hours

I got a spinal too and I loved it! The recovery time was shorter for me than with an epi. The only thing is that I felt a little nauseous during the c-section, but they gave me something right away and it was gone! I also had a happy shot... I don't know what it was, but I was having a meltdown and I was crying and the anesthesiologist gave me something. Within a minute, I was laughing!!!! I was conscious enough to tell her that her stuff was really good! ; )
Sorry to be Debbie downer but I had a spinal with my RCS and what an awful experience... The numbing medicine they used hurt and burned like hell... The first spinal was unsuccessful and they laid me down and the Or nurses started prepping me and I could still feel absolutely every little thing... They sat me back up and opened another spinal kit... Numbing burned once again and she was poking around so much and a few time I got this horrible shooing pain down my leg and one straight down my butt. Finally the anesthesiologist took over and he too had a difficult time but finally got it. As soon as they laid me down I got a PouNDInG headache I started freaking out and crying and the anesthesiologist and CRNA both looked nervous which made it even worse. Then came nausea.. They gave me something and it went away. Thankful the c/s itself was quick and my OB was talking me thru it and makin me laugh and feel comfortable... I just wanted to get the hell out of thy OR... All in all I ended up with spinal headaches and needed a blood patch. Thankfully the anesthesiologist was fabulous, quick and inflicted as least pain as possible. Basically, I had a horrible experience and probably should've tried the vbac... I am contemplating not having anymore babies bc I dont want to go thru that again. Oh and if that isn't enough read my post about fevers, headaches and chills!
For my repeat C-section I had both the spinal (the usual choice for scheduled c-sections) plus they placed an epidural in case they needed to add any extra drugs. Because it was a repeat, and I was doing the tubal also, it was likely to take longer and the spinal is a one shot deal that does wear off. We knew from my first c/s that I did tend to need more meds than average too.
For my first c/s I had an epidural because it was already in place since I was planning on a vaginal birth. I had an awful experience. I'm fairly sure a spinal could NOT go worse than the epidural. I threw up the whole time, but it wasn't because of the epidural, it was all the meds they gave me before the c/s to try to stop my contractions (fetal distress).
I'll have a spinal this time.

Re: anesthesia for scheduled c-section
is it easy/fast to put in? and does it hurt or just feel like a normal shot?
It doesn't hurt at all. I thought the spinal was the easiest part.
Spinal
I didn't think it was bad at all. But I had a great doc, he was super nice and explained everything.
He even came in later in the day to make sure it was wearing off.
