Breastfeeding

is this a nursing strike or what...please help

For the last several days, LO has started popping on and off the breast.  He'll act really hungry then i'll put him on and he'll suck a bit and then pop off and act like he's looking for the nipple again.  Last night was horrible, he was crying so hard and would not keep the breast in his mouth. I finally gave him a bottle of formula which he sucked down like a maniac and then took the breast a little better after that.  It seems worse in the evening, but this morning even was hard.

Some background - LO is three months and he's had bottles since the beginning due to supply issues and a lot of pressure from everyone around me but he has never had a problem going back and forth between breast and bottle.  I recently upped his formula intake by a few ounces to appease my husband who thought he wasn't gaining enough.   Last week I saw a LC to see what I can do to up my supply.  She didn't think I had a letdown problem and ruled out thrush but thought it was supply/storage capacity related and recommended goat's rue, domperidone and pumping after feedings as well as getting my thyroid and anemia checked out.  LO is not on a schedule, I nurse him on demand and he usually nurses a LOT (sometimes constantly for several hours), so this is really strange for me that he is not wanting to nurse.

  • My LO has started this too....I'm thinking it's that 3mo growth spurt.  Keep nursing, your LO is telling your body to make more milk.

  • some times it is. some times they'll start to prefer one over the other. my son started doing this. it was like he was only eating from me as a comfort to get to sleep. so i stop formula all together and replaced it with pumped milk . (this was at 1 month for my son) but i also noticed this same be hehavior if i stopped taking my vitamines regularly.   my lo is now almosted weaned at 15mths. i 've been feeding a little longer cuz my ped. recomended i do since my lo was a 32 weeker.

  • I agree this is probably a growth spurt. Rather than supplement with bottle and formula just let him nurse constantly. Your body will start to meet his demands.
