I heard a piece on NPR about nostalgia and the youth the other day. It was actually an interview of an author but the basic premise was that everyone was surprised at how this book that dealt with the time in a very fluid fashion and was supposed to inspire nostalgia was so popular among younger readers. They explored the connection between things like Facebook, where you can record something instantaneously and the past. That young people are faced with so much instant and "now" that they crave a slower pace.
It made me think about how the old fashioned names are reappearing. I know about the 100 year rule etc. but I was thinking that it's interesting how there are these very trendy names and at the same time old fashioned names are re-emerging. For hundreds of years the name choices were pretty much the same and in the 20th century it seemed that names were suddenly something that could be trendy and dated. Perhaps we've gotten to such a point that we're rejecting the ideas of modern = better and that is being felt in the baby name world?
