Since it's not recommended to use blankets or bumpers in the crib anymore, what's the purpose of the bedding set? Is it pure decoration (and if so where do you put it if it's not in the crib)?
Just trying to decide if I should look for one/put in on the registry or just skip it all together. What are you ladies thinking?
Re: Are nursery bedding sets even worth it?
I vote not worth it. I haven't even considered one. I'm going to have a custom crib skirt made on Etsy and I've registered for several crib sheets that match our nursery colors.
Me (33). DH (37). DD (2.2012). MCs x4. After 4 years & 7 months, due 4.2018!
I have two thoughts on this. We found a nursery set we loved on clearance for our first LO and bought it. It had a 4 piece set. The bed skirt you can't see because of our crib style. The quilt and bumpers of course we don't use because of suffocation risks. So basically, most expensive sheet I ever bought AND the sheet isn't even that cute.
On the flip side, I waited a long time to be a momma. I had visions of the perfect baby nursery. I dreamt about being a mommy the way some girls dream of being rock stars or playing WNBA. I ask myself, well okay maybe I shouldn't have bought it. Then I think, by the same token, we're reusing it for babies and it really was a dream of mine, so I might still have bought it even if I knew now what I knew then.
Great and really helpful answer right?
We did buy one with DS and will probably buy one with this LO too.
We still use the diaper stacker... he's not completely potty trained
The valence is still hanging up
We used the sheets
We used the crib skirt
We did use the bumper, but this was before the warnings
The quilt we put on our lazy boy, and DH and I used it with him at night when he slept on our chest- it kept our legs warm and we had a snuggler. When he got older and could have a blanket (almost 2), he used the quilt himself. Now he's in a twin and uses a real blanket, but it was really helpful in teaching him how to use a blanket
So, is it completely worth it? No, but we did get use out of all the pieces. If you find one you love, and use it appropriately, you can still get your money's worth out of it.
I'd skip it, but I'm practical like that. If someone was going to spend the $100-$150 on purchasing it from my registry, I'd rather have that go towards a more necessary item like a breast pump or car seat.
There are SOOOO many cute independent decorations now (like on Etsy) that I think its easy to spruce up the nursery. I still think the bedding sets are adorable, but can't see paying all that money for a crib skirt and sheet.
I got one for my first and it ended up being a huge waste of money. I had the bumper in there for the first 5 months when she was still sleeping in our room in a bassinet and not in her crib and then had to take it out. By the time she was a toddler and able to use blankets, she had a quilt that she liked so much more.
Skip it and a cute bedskirt, sheets, and accessories!
We're just doing solid sheets and I'm making a quilt (for decorative purposes). I might make a bumper to have in there until baby actually starts sleeping in his crib. (ya know... just for pictures sake.) I don't think we'll have a skirt.
The theme we're doing doesn't exactly have a set that goes with it, so....
Since I have two babies that are going to share a room I have to buy two of almost everything related to the bedding so they will match so I am creating my own sets...I bought the dotted crib sheets from Carter's and will pair them with my own minky blankets instead of using bulky comforters that are just not necessary. They are just for show anyways, during the night I will just move the blankets I buy and put the babies into their sleepsacks. So no, I would just worry about cute sheets and maybe a few nice blankets, they can be used more. The sheets come in so many patterns and colors now that I found it fun even just picking those out too.
I've been googling when it's safe to use normal bedding items.
Pillows are not recommended under age 2. Most other soft objects (blankets, sheets, stuffed animals, dolls, etc, are not recommended until 12 months. Since we're all delivering in the spring, I figure the kid won't need bedding for warmth until he/she is roughly 18 months. By then, he/she will have enough of a personality that he/she might want to pick something out himself/herself.
That said, if you've really fallen in love with something and it goes perfectly with what the room will look like with a toddler bed, then go ahead and register and shove the package in the closet until the kid's old enough to use the stuff. If nothing else, the blanket or sheet might be useful to lay out on the floor during play time.
DH bought one for DD1 and honestly, we only used the crib sheet, diaper stacker and the bumpers (this was in 2007 and not even that big of a deal since we ended up using the crib as a side car). Nothing else was used and it was a total waste of money for us. We haven't bought one since and are not planning on doing it this time around either. But we also didn't do a nursery for DD2, nor will we be doing one for the boys.
