Losing weight

I was 9 lbs below pre-pregnancy weight by PP week 3. Then it plateaued. I started at 192, was 208 at delivery, and and 183 now. Since week 3 PP. Any tips on how to lose weight AND not risk milk supply? I am only getting 1600-1800 calories a day. I know I need more. But to be brutally honest, we can hardly afford groceries as it is. DH just got laid off for the fall/winter, and adding more to the shopping cart just isn't an option until I find a better job!

But I keep hearing you lose more BFing if you get your extra calories. I am at a loss. Any help or tips would be nice.

Re: Losing weight

  • I have WIC. Don't qualify for food stamps (on paper, I make way too much....in reality, an ex-husband left me with his financial mess and a lot of garnishments. Yay) We have no cable, no extras on our phone, one vehicle, and no extras we can cut.I am actually in the running for a promotion and a raise. Irony: that would be a new position in our medical office running the weight loss clinic. Go figure. One of the things, though, is I would have to continue losing weight and get to a target weight for my height. So I am really trying to lose. Not too fast, but I am 3 months post partum and it is frustrating to see the scale in the same spot for the last 10 weeks.  My milk supply is great. I went back to work 2 weeks PP and pump at work, nurse at home. I know there have been moms successful at losing. I also know BFing should make it easier.

  • I plateaued about the same time, but I kept eating just as much and breastfeeding.  Now, at 9 months pp, I'm about 20 pounds under my pre-pregnancy weight.  Just keep up your calorie intake, and it will come off slowly.

  • Just keep eating healthy and it will come off slowly.  Remember whole grains, oatmeal, dairy, water, fruits and vegs.  The better you eat the better your supply and health.  I also needed more red meat, then I eat before BF.
