Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Flu Shot

Our pedi's offie just called to schedule an appt for DDs flu shot (they didn't have it yet when I took her in for her 6 mo shots).

Nurse said she will more than likely get sick with it.

How did your babies react to it?

DD hasn't really been sick yet, a few sniffles here and there, but nothing else.

Re: Flu Shot

  • DS got a mild fever that night and was perfectly fine the next morning.

Other than being fussy (and she got all her vaccinations, so I have no idea if it was the flu shot specifically), DD was fine.

When you say the nurse said she would get sick with it, do you mean she might run a slight fever or that she would get "sick?"  Because I don't know why the nurse would say that, you don't get the flu from the flu shot.

She said she would get "sick." I questioned this too, since I've never been "sick" from the flu shot.  She said since the virus is in the shot, the baby may get very ill after.  Our nurse says a lot of weird things, they usually go in one ear and out the other, but she scared me today.

  • DS was perfectly fine. I thought they weren't meant to get sick with the flu shot because it's not a live vaccine.

  • Are you sure she's a nurse? Maybe she is a CNA, MA, or a tech of some sort? I hate to think that a nurse (especially an RN) would say that...

Um, yeah, you can't get the flu from the flu shot. You can have the sniffles and maybe a fever, but I honestly would ask to speak to her supervisor regarding the misinformation she is spouting. I would have trouble believing anything she says from here on out, and you need to be able to trust what your nurse tells you. She shouldn't be administering vaccinations when she clearly doesn't know how they work.

DD had no reaction at all to the flu shot.

    PS- I'm a pediatric nurse...

  • My LO had no reaction but I made sure as with all his shots that I give him Tylenol 1/2 before the shot, then another dose 4 hours later.

  • Since the flu shot doesn't contain a live virus I am going to venture a guess and say your nurse is an idiot. I would talk to the pedi when you go in and tell them what she said because she is completely wrong.

Both my kids got the flu shot, and neither have them have been sick from it.

This, exactly (well, I'm not a nurse, but I agree with her about talking to her supervisor. The misinformation is troubling.)

  • I called and left a msg for the ped and when she called me back, I explained what information I was given and the ped said she would talk to her since her information was incorrect.  There are 2 nurses, and the nurse I was talking about is an LVN.

I've done all my research and knew the virus was inactive, but her comment really freaked me out.

I usually don't deal with this nurse as I've overheard her say some off the wall things.  I usually deal directly with the ped.
