Babies: 6 - 9 Months

What formula do you use?

Good Morning! We are going to be introducing formula soon (mixed with BM) and I was wondering what has worked best for you. I know in the end it is what LO likes but I'm just trying to decide what to try first. My pedi said any of the name brands are good. TIA!

Re: What formula do you use?

  • Actually any of them are good.  Period.  The generics follow the same FDA guidelines and pass the same testing as name brands.  But just as some babies tolerate Enfamil but not Similac, some babies tolerate a generic and some don't.  But they're all good.

  • DS is on Similac Alimentum.  DD used Similac Sensitive.  Both were EBF for  five months before switching to formula.  I have found that Similac Ready to Feed has the best flavor/taste IMO.

  • We use Similac Advance.  I used it with both my girls, but the first poster is right - any of them (even the generics) are good.  They all follow the same guidelines.
  • We tried Gerber Goodstart first but she didn't care for it.  We're using Target brand now (generic for Enfamil) and she's happy with it.

  • We use any store brand that is comparable to Similac Advanced because that's what we started out with. She has no problem switching between store brands though.

  • We're a rare case. Baby's Only Organic Lactose Free after trying several other popular brands' sensitive/lactose-free formulas.

  • It's totally up to you, but I wouldn't be afraid to try the store brand formula.  I started my son on Enfamil Premium Lipil because it's what the hospital gave us.  Then, we slowly changed over to a store brand because the price was ridiculous.

We use Up & Up from Target.  It has the nutrient comparison right on the side of the can (we use the Up & Up Triple Select which is pretty much the exact same thing as Enfamil Premium Lipil). My DS actually has less gas with the Up & Up.  I would give it try - if your LO doesn't take to it will then try a different brand.

It's literally half the price and just as good!

  • I recently started giving my bf'd baby formula occassionally, and we use Nestle Goodstart only because we had a coupon. DD seems to be fine with it. BTW, I didn't mix with BM or anything to introduce it. I just fed her straight up formula and she downed it like nobody's business. I thought she'd be turned off by the taste, but she didn't seem to even notice.

  • DS really likes the Parent's Choise (Walmart) Organic. It like Similac Organic, but it uses organic lactose while Similac uses organic sucrose which is actally banned in formula in Europe (since 2009). Its not at every Walmart, so I'd check the Parent's Choice website if your interested...

  • late reply but we had DD on Similac until the recall (Beetle larva  in her formula) so I refuse to use Similac.

DS started on enamel when I weaned but it caused severe constipation. I thought his system would get used to it but a month into it I switched to goodstart gentle and he has done great.
