Babies: 6 - 9 Months

stopping BF ?

My little guy is almost 9 months - he eats solids occasionally- some days he eats a ton, other days he will have nothing to do with it. he is not doign well with teething which i know is why he is being fussy.

Other than the solids he is EBF-ed. he will not take a bottle AT ALL - i tried different formulas, and pumped milk- he would take a bottle from my husband, but he is deployed. In the meantime my supply has TANKED. this poor little guy is always hungry and just wants to nurse. Any tips on how to get him to take a bottle of formula ?

Thank you in advance.

Re: stopping BF ?

  • Can you have someone else give him a bottle? Have you tried different bottles and different formulas? Have you tried mixing BM with formula?

I know your question is on tips for getting him to take a bottle of formula, but if he loves to nurse I would suggest trying to get your supply back up if you haven't already.

  • In addition to the PP recommendation about mixing BM an formula, could you try a sippy cup?

  • he will take a sippy cup - but just for a few sips. I tried the sippy with formula, juice and a yogurt smoothie and he bites the top, but wont really drink from it.

we are staying with my parents and they have tried to give him a bottle and a sippy but he wont take it from them either. i never even though tto try a different bottle.

is 9 months to late to try and up your supply ?

  • and i tried to mix pumped milk with the formula and that didnt work either and now when i pump, i dont get much at all to be able to mix it. i am at my wits end here.
  • He may want to comfort nurse because of the pain of teething?  You could try giving him high calorie foods when he eats solids like bananas and avocados so he can hopefully fill up a little more on small amounts of food.

  • It's never too late to increase your supply!  How much milk you have is completely related to supply and demand.  Put him on that boob whenever you feel like he's hungry:)  It usually takes a few days for your body to catch up. Good luck!
  • No you can still increase your supply. I was away form my daughter for a good portion of the day for over a week and unable to pump due to a family emergency. My supply tanked pretty quick .  I went back to pumping after EVERY feeding to stimulate my supply to come back.  It took about three days before anything happened but it really helped, now everybody is happy and back into the routine.  Plus, I kept pumping after each feeding and ended up having a lot of milk left over to store incase I end up having to be away from her again

Definitely not. As PP'er said, nurse on demand as much as possible. You can also try pumping right after a nursing session to tell your body you need more. There are food items that also help many people (oatmeal, flax, brewer's yeast...). I eat homeade granola with all of those items every morning and I can pump much more than I used to. Or you could google a recipe for lactation cookies. Fenugreek is an herb that has also been known to help. If you haven't looked at kellymom.com, they are a great resource for BFing. HTH and GL!
