DC & Colds....

When your LO has a cold, do you still send them?  At what point do you keep them home?  I was thinking if they are running a fever or vomiting that they need to stay home...but DD developed a cold yesterday and I felt so bad dropping her off.  She was in good spirits (still laughing, smiling etc.) but it's still hard.  But I couldn't take today off (they were closed Friday due to her taking a personal day) and DH has been off all last week because he has been very sick.  So there's no one to watch her.

Ugh.  I just want to cuddle up with her.  It will at least make me feel better!

Re: DC & Colds....

  • Daycare rules are that they can't go with a fever over 101, and that they must be fever free (without meds) for 24 hours before they can go back.

If they are not themselves - not having fun, looking like they don't feel well - they stay home.  If they are happy, yet have snot pouring out of their nose, they still go (so long as it's clear - you know the rules).

I figure if I could stay home when I clearly don't feel well, I would. So I let them stay and rest those days.

  • DS has a pretty bad cold today. I stayed home with him because he was pretty fussy. Did not sleep well overnight due to being stuffed up. Wants to be held a lot. He is just overall grumpy and not himself. I felt it was not fair to DS or the DCP to send him like that and I did not have anything to do today at work that was super important so I stayed home.

  • Congestion + runny nose + cranky = still send them

Fever over 101 = have to keep them home

  • If LO has a fever over 101, she either can't go to DC or, if if develops while she's there, I get the call that she has to be picked up. However, if she is seen by her doc and has a fever due to an ear infection, she can go back since EIs are infectious. She must be fever free for 24 hours before returning. If she is vomiting, has diarrhea more than twice in an hour, or has a fever, she stays home. If she just has a cold, she goes. No WAY could DH or I take off work every time she was stuffy. Hope LO feels better soon.

  • The only time I keep my girls home from daycare is if they are puking or have a fever.  There are times when I wish I could keep them home, but my work isn't all that understanding of taking time off, so I have to save my days for when they are really sick.
  • Our daycare says to keep them home for a fever of 100.5 or higher (and they will send them home at that point).  You're not required to leave them at home for just a cold (and they'll catch a lot of colds at daycare).
