Breastfeeding

supplementing?

I have been BF and pumping for the last 8 months. I had a few major shift changes at work that messed with pumping and sleep. My supply has dropped and I think I might have to start supplementing with some formula. If I am going to add 2 or 3 oz. of formula to BM bottles can I prepare them the night before and mix everything together?

Re: supplementing?

  • I think as long as it's used within 24 hours you can, but I'm not sure.

As long as LO is still having wet/dirty diapers every day, I think you're supply is ok.

Someone else maybe able to answer better.

  • Are you supplementing because you arent getting enough milk? because if you are getting enough there is no need to supplement.

you can definitely get your supply back up, find a few hours of free time (when LO is napping) and power pump. pump until you are empty, then wait 10 minutes and pump for 10 minutes, then wait 10 mins and pump again, repeat for an hour or two (if possible) or if possible add in a middle of the night pumping session.

anyway, if you are dead set on adding some formula to LOs diet, it is recomended NOT to mix the two into the same container. give LO whatever you have for breastmilk on hand and then make a formula bottle to make sure LO is nice and full.  If you are using powdered formula you can read the can to see how long the formula is good for once it is mixed with water.

    good luck

  • I am not able to pump enough right now to provide all of the bottles for the time I am at work. Maybe I will give the power pumping a shot tomorrow evening. Thanks!
