Eggnog?

My favorite holiday drink is eggnog! (non-alcoholic of course). Is it safe to drink pasteurized eggnog during pregnancy? Just a little bit? I'll be 20+ weeks by Christmas.

  • Some eggnog has raw eggs do that would be a no go. But there are versions with no raw eggs on it

  • The non alcoholic pasteurized pre-prepared non-raw egg versions would be fine.

  • Almost everything they sell in a normal grocery store is pasteurized and fine to eat while pregnant. Even blue cheese, feta, eggnog, and other soft cheeses are pasteurized by law if sold in normal stores. Specialty stores are almost the only place to get non pasteurized food anymore. Just read the ingredients if you are wondering

  • Oh shoot...I just had some today, a small glass but still...I made sure it said pasteurized and non-alcoholic on it but how do you know about eggs?
  • Check the ingredients label, but you're probably fine.  Most of the mass-produced eggnogs don't have raw egg these days.

  • They're not going to sell anything like this with raw eggs in it. They just can't. The entire product is probably pasteurized after it is made. Same with bottled caesar dressings. No raw eggs. The only stuff you don't want to drink is your  Aunt Bertha's secret family recipe because that stuff probably does use raw eggs.
My mom drank a quart of eggnog after an OB appointment when she was pregnant with my brother. Even 33 years later he'd drink the stuff by the gallon if he could!

  • MOST pre-packaged eggnog is pasteurized.  I wouldn't worry.  Just pass on the brandy :)

This times 100.  Grocery stores just can't sell unpasteurized products in the U.S.  And eggs aren't t unsafe anymore if they are pasteurized; they actually sell pasteurized eggs for people to use in mayonnaise and such (and this is how they make cookie dough that is safe to eat for ice creams.)
