Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Anyone using PnP instead of crib? Special mattress?

I've heard you can pick up a special kind of mattress or foam because it is not good for babies to sleep regularly on the hard surface of the PnP. Thoughts? Ideas? I'm trying to avoid purchasing a second crib for a few more months, until LO1 outgrows hers...and then I can let LO2 sleep in it.

  • it's recommend baby sleep on a firm surface, not a soft one. It sleeps prevent SIDs, just like the back to sleep. I would not add anything to the pnp. Foam positioners are actually strongly discouraged now.

We use a pnp in our room at night. I've never heard of the harder surface being bad. We did the same with DD1 for the first 6 mos.

Ditto all of this. If you really feel you need extra padding, get a quilted PNP sheet, just make sure it fits well.

Agreed!  My LO regularly sleeps nights in her PNP.  I have never heard about having to add anything to it.  It's fine the way it is.

  • DD2 is sleeping in the PNP bassinet for now before we move her into a crib. The PNP pad is perfectly fine for babies to sleep on. You do not need to use a special mattress. You can use a fitted PNP sheet if you wish (we do).

  • We used a PnP the entire time with DS#1- some of the time we had the quilted sheet on it.  He was fine.  He actually never has slept in a crib.  The hard surface is actually better for them.

  • Same here...quilted sheet only.

I bought the mamadoo mattress, but it's simply too huge (tall) with the PnP bassinet, so we're using it for tummy time right now.
