Food suggestions for 22 mos

My girls are somewhat picky eaters and I feel like lately we are all getting tired of the same foods (Us with preparing them and them eating it).  I am looking for some new ideas...can anyone help me out.  They are 22 mos and can use a spoon okay, still working in the fork, but they really tend to use their hands.  Some of their favs are mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, bananas, strawberries, and chicken.  What do you your LO's eat?  TIA!

Re: Food suggestions for 22 mos

  • Tonight the kids are having Honey Ham, green beans, mac and cheese.

Something else they like is when I cut a piece of bread with a round cookie cutter and put it in a muffin tin.  I put a bit a cheese, ham, veggies and an egg over the bread and bake until the egg is cooked through.  I serve that with fruit.

All white meat chicken nuggets and fish sticks from the healthy food section of the grocery.

I've also taken zucchini cut it into thin rounds, dipped it in egg and then a mixture of bread crumbs and parm cheese and baked at 350 until it's somewhat golden.

What about putting some ham and cheese in a crescent, roll and bake?

I tend to get a lot of good ideas off pinterest.

    I'm in a rut, too.

  • break the cycle now.  They eat what you eat or they don't eat at all.  it will not hurt them and when they realize you mean business they will eat.  After a few days it will not be such a battle.

  • My girls are a few months younger, but I'm finding we're in a rut too.  If my girls ate what I ate for dinner - they'd be eating Lean Cuisines - ha :)  Their favorite dinner is ravioli - I buy our local grocery store's frozen ravioli.  They eat this several times a week.  They also like veggie burgers, veggie chicken nuggets (morningstar brand), peanut butter & banana sandwiches and grilled cheese w/ tomatoes.

I also got this recipe off the toddlers board for nuggets.  It took a little bit of time to make, but it lasted several meals and my picky girls seemed to like it (with a bit of ketchup!)

8 oz ground chicken (or turkey), 1 medium carrot, 1 medium apple, 1/2 garlic clove, 1/2 small onion, 1 small egg yolk - beaten, 1/4 cup breadcrumbs, pinch crushed dried thyme, pinch freshly ground pepper.

Peel and grate the carrot, apple, onion and garlic.  Place in mixing bowl with ground chicken.  Add beaten egg yolk, breadcrumbs, thyme and pepper.  Mix well.  Roll the mixture in sausages, place in grill pan (broiler) and heat for 10 minutes on each side.

  • My go-to meals are: meatballs with sweet potato fries, meatloaf, rice& beans with shredded cheese, homemade mac&cheese, slow cooker beef stroganoff, slow cooker chicken & dumplings, chicken breasts topped with pesto and mozzarella cheese, homemade chicken fingers, pan fried tilapia, baked salmon with pecans. I always serve milk and a veggie and starch with dinner.

Ditto pp. Teach the girls now that what you're serving is their dinner. Since my girls at a minimum are given a protein, carb and veggie, they have something on their plate they will eat. They understand that this is what is being served and I serve it to them even if they've refused it in the past. My girls now eat everything....for now anyway :)

  • Cute siggie!

It has only gotten worse for us.  I wasn't ever going to give my girls chicken nuggets.  Now I bribe them to eat nuggets.

Avocado has been yummy to them all along, and I'll do avo on toast for snack sometimes.

Vivi will eat beans (black, kidney, etc.) and will even eat them cold on her plate.  It's awesome.  Audrey won't touch them.

Vivienne has just decided to use her fork all the time!  They really are on their own sched.

Me, too, janjag! Both my girls are so thin (one is in the 10th % for her weight) so I just can't bring myself to tough it out and not have them eat anything at all!

Anyways, mine are 23 months and here are a few things they will eat (moreso for one DD than the other but I always offer both of them the same thing):

-Eggo waffles w/ butter (dr. said since they are underweight, don't be shy about butter and/or olive oils when cooking!!)

-Honey nut Cheerios with Whole milk

-Yogurt parfaits (take a yogurt and then do layering of cereal and different berries)

-Spaghetti with marinara sauce (on rare occasion they will not notice the spinach or veggies I've added to the sauce but mostly they just like it plain Jane)

-Mac n Cheese (a friend suggested a can of carrots and mashing them into the mac as it's the same color and her DS gobbles it up w/o noticing the veggies!)

    -Hot dogs cut up

-Low sodium deli turkey slices and/or honey ham slices

-Gerber Graduate toddler meals (mine really like the Pasta Wheels ones!)

    - Chicken nuggets

-Mini bagels (Lender's has them pre-sliced) with strawberry cream cheese

-Uncrustables (PBJ rounds found in the frozen aisles)

-Hash brown patties and maple sausage links (both found in frozen foods)

-Rice crackers spread with Laughing Cow cheese wedges

    HTH!!

  • Thank you for the suggestions.  Yeah my girls are SO small and skinny and the Dr said don't be shy with butter either.  I can't bear to make them eat what we eat and risk them not eating at all either.
