Breastfeeding

When can I stop pumping & dumping?

Hey ladies I need refreshing on the rules for pumping & dumping after drinking. I went to a halloween party last night and from 9pm-12 am I drank 3 beers and one jello shot. I gave LO milk from my stash when we came home at 1 (she woke up :), again this morning at 9, and then again at noon. Each time I pumped and dumped. When can I stop p&ding and just feed her from the breast? I was thinking maybe the next time she eats (prob around 3 or 4) it would be ok, since it will have been 15 hrs since my last drink? Any answers appreciated!

  • Dr. Sears (and some other sites I found but can't remember which) said if you're not feeling the effects of the alcohol, it has metabolized out of your body/milk and it's okay to feed, no need for pumping/dumping.  I would stop now and just feed your DC.

This. If by chance I feel I drank too much (which is not often because I don't drink that much) then I'll dump

    Yep!

I go by the rule of thumb that if I can feel the alcohol then I cannot breastfeed. Pump and dumping doesn't get alcohol out of your system, it just keeps you from becoming painfully engorged/leaking.

  • Honestly? I wouldn't dump it. I'd mix it with *safe* milk. 1oz milk from drinking with 3oz non. Doesn't let it go to waste.

  • I have heard it stays in your system the same as it does for driving. so if you are ok to drive you are ok to nurse.

eta: also, like a pp said, pumping and dumping doesnt remove alcohol from milk, it only keeps your supply up and helps with engorgement

  • I am sad for all your wasted milk! It was probably a good idea to give her other milk at 1 am, but you only needed to pump then if you were engorged.

You were fine to feed her both times this morning.

Check out kellymom.com on alcohol too.

THis!!! However, I did it the first time too.  Then I bought the strips just to reassure myself that it was true that if I didn't "feel" drunk then my milk was fine :)

Rule of thumb for most is if you would be good to drive, then you'd be good to nurse :)

  • Sorry for the above post, I'm using my phone and I guess it didn't let me quote....but everyone is correct, when alcohol leaves your blood, it leaves your milk, no need to pump n dump unless your engorged. And if your sober enough to drive, your sober enough to nurse.
