VBAC

Intro and question?

Hi, I'm new to this board.  I had my DS via c-section since he was breech.  He was also huge at 39wks (9lbs-6oz and 22in long).  With my family history, this was the norm.  Since my DS was breech my entire 3rd trimester, I cancelled my birthing class during that pregnancy.

I was going to take a birthing class this time around (just in case), but all signs were pointing towards another big breech baby.  Then the baby flipped head down to all our surprise and at my weight check u/s yesterday revealed the LO is 7lb-4oz currently (not as big as I expected).

I have a repeat c-section scheduled for Nov 2nd (39wks) but now I'm gaining confidence to try a VBAC.  I'm considering cancelling my c/s date but I still need to talk more with my OB and DH.  The posts on this VBAC board have been very encouraging and I'm starting to think that I can do this.

I think I've missed all the ICAN meetings between now and my due date.  I also don't think that I will be able to find a last minute birthing class (even a one day one).  Has anyone found good online or video resources to prep them for birthing?  Thankfully, my cousin works in the L&D at the hospital that I'm delivering at and said she'd come (even if she wasn't working that day).  Does anyone have recommendations for other things that would prepare me a bit more?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Re: Intro and question?

  • Prenatal yoga was a big help when I was pg with my first son - he ended up being a c-section, but I used the breathing and poses and stuff while I was laboring. If you have Netflix, there's videos available on their streaming, I think. And it'd be something you can do right away, since you're so close to term. And staying upright and active and ignoring contractions for as long as possible are all really helpful with laboring (especially if it's a larger baby).

Good luck! My VBAC baby was 10 lb 10oz and 23.5".

    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • I just thought I would chime in about big babies! My first was 9lbs 13oz, my second(which they said was measuring well over 8.5) was 7pounds 13oz and my third was 7.11. So, just because people tell you that once a big baby, always big babies isn't necessarily the case. And, big babies run in my family too. I say go for the vbac! I have known many women to vaginally deliver over 9 pound babies with a lot of success.

As far as classes, have you thought about getting a bradley book or some hypnobaby cd's? Could you hire a doula? She could coach you through everything and maybe that would make you more comfortable if you don't have time for a class!
