Sleeping it off? And antibiotic question

DD had what we can only say was a viral thing this week. No real symptoms other than a high fever. Like really high. She did have a mild ear infection too. (probably 2 unrelated issues). So the Pedi put her on 10 days of Omnicef, which is a pretty strong antibiotic. As soon as we started it she started having terrible diarrhea. After 5 days, her fever broke night before last.

Anyways, she is still sleeping after 12 hours straight right now. Pretty much her normal 7:30-7:30, but she hasn't gotten up at all!!! Not the usual for her. The only thing I did different was I forgot to give her the Omnicef yesterday. The diarrhea slowed immensely, and she was much happier.

She only had 4 days of the 10 day course, but I am very tempted to stop giving it to her. Is that terrible? I know it's not the right thing to do probably, but it seemed to be making her feel worse:(

Re: Sleeping it off? And antibiotic question

  • Were on the same thing right now for a mild ear infection and she definetly has been sleeping more. Im not stopping it because if you stop mid-antibiotic it wont fully go away and might come back etc etc. Were only on day 2 and i also noticed her diapers are more runny. However my DD seems fine when shes awake.

  • It's never a good idea to stop antibiotics mid-cycle, but if she's having problem side effects from it, then I would call the pedi.  Maybe they can prescribe something a little gentler.

C recently was on antibiotics (amoxicillin) and he had diarrhea, but seemed fine otherwise.

    Hope she feels better soon!

  • Yeah, I went on ahead and gave it to her today. I missed yesterday, but I will finish out the course. She is still cranky today before I gave it to her, so I am thinking that wasn't the issue. I think she was/is just really sick and it takes a while to get better. Poor angel :(

  • Ask the pedi about giving her some probiotics to help with the diarrhea.  Worked like a charm for DS1 (even as a baby) when we had to give him antibiotics for ear infections.  We got the probiotics at Target in the pharmacy (no script needed but in the frig in the pharmacy).

  • Don't stop giving the antibiotics.  If you're worried about the side effects I would call the Dr. and see what they say about things to do to help with the diarrhea.
