TTC after 35

Opting for Acupuncture instead of IVF...for now

Over the summer I started IVF treatments after my doctor determined it would be the best way for me to get preggers because my FSH level was around 13.3. First they put me on birth control pills which was supposed to lower my FSH, but the day before I was supposed to start my injections they did a sonogram and found a cyst in my left ovary. They called me that night and told me not to start my injections.

Although I was never really comfortable with the idea needing IVF to conceive, I was really bummed out when they told me not to proceed. I started researching the benefits of acupuncture on fertility and decided to go that route instead of continuing on with IVF. I discussed it with my doctor and she suggested I give it six months and then reconsider IVF because I'm 39 1/2 and she doesn't think I should waste time, but I have faith that this will work.

On the advice of my acupuncturist I just purchased the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. Has anyone else read it? Also, has anyone else been successful using acupuncture and chinese herbs to get pregnant?

  • I started doing acupunture in April. At the time, my FSH was 12.1 (tested in Jan 11). While doing acu, my FSH only continued to rise. I'm not saying it caused it but acu just didn't do anything for me FSH-wise. At last check in June, it was 17.3,  I know some believe in acu, I  personally would not wait 6 months at age 39 to start IVF (since you were just about to start it anyway).  I would love to go back in time to do IVF  in Jan 11 just to see if it would have made a difference with 12.1 FSH.   I am going to ER tomorrow with only 2 follies. I just cannot grow follies due to my worsening FSH.  I am 38.

  • There are a lot of books out there.  I did read Taking Charge of your Fertility and it is a comprehensive book that talks about all aspects of fertility.  If you are looking for something with more "east meets west" vibe you might want to check out Making Babies by Dr Sami David.  That is the book my acupuncturist recommended.  Good luck on your journey.
