If you have the laundry/mud room combo....

How in the hell do you keep it organized? I'm seriously ready to flip my sh*t because I feel like there are shoes, coats, laundry baskets/dirty clothes everywhere. It's the first thing I see as I walk into the house from the garage and it just pisses me off.

Soooo...if you have the laundry/mud room - any organizational tips? Did you do any reworking of the room? After 7 years of constant disorganization, I've had it.

  • Our mudroom is a mess 75% of the time, I can't imagine adding, dirty clothes. laundry baskets to the mix!  Are certain parts of it designated for laundry / mud room?

  • We have a coat rack to hang coats/purse/bookbags etc hanging on the wall. We also have a shoe storage shelf for the kids' shoes. We have an additional one in the closet in the laundry room for more shoes. Hats, mittens and scarves go on top of the shoe storage shelf. I only bring down a couple loads of laundry at a time so we don't have heaps of dirty clothes. I do everyone's laundry individually, so this makes it easier. Each person's laundry can be done in 2 loads since I wash everything on cold.

  • We have a closet in our laundry/mudd room.  My husband put racks in the closet to store all of the extra detergents.  Then there are cupboards above the washer/dryer to store the detergent in use and dryer sheets.  We have 3 sets of hampers(DH & I share and then the kids share one, and a whites only hamper)  The kids' hamper is in their bathroom.  My hamper and whites only is in the laundry closet.   We hang our coats in the closet that is by the front door not in the laundry room.    It's easier for me to do laundry when it's separated by hampers.
  • Mud room section - have a cabinet (only 2 - one for me & H as the LO is only 6 mnths) that have selves inside, their tall. and a bench with a cushion on top. Basically shoes, bags, jackets, keys, or anything we bring in that usually stays there has a special place on the shelf. If it's not there, I have a basket on the bottom shelf of each cabinet that it goes to.

Laundry room section - 3 large hampers all lined side by side. One for dark colors, light colors, and one for towels. I take my clothes & my towels. H takes his clothes & his towels. If he doesn't do it by the time that I was that specific hamper, it's dirty until the next time.. I usually wash 2 loads a day. Lights & darks. Then towels every weekend (Friday).

-We have shelves for detergent, stain removers, washing powders, etc. I stack them on the shelf.
-For clean laundry (I have hampers sitting by dryer & they are folded & put there). H has the wonderful duty of putting everything away since I do all of the washing.

    Hope this helps :) GL!

  • My last house had one.  I put hooks up high and down low on the wall behind the door.  DH and I used the high hooks for our shorter coats and DS used the lower hooks for his coats.  On the back of the door I used one of those over the door fabric type shoe racks (it has a bunch of pockets in it) and I used it for mittens, scarves and hats.
